I agree with the facts stated but I have a different take. Minus Rupp, US is awful at Marathons. US XC and T&F need to focus on tailoring training for sprinters, middle-distance runners, jumpers and throwers. The rest of US Marathoners are so far away from world class, it shows investing in long distance running in US is poor return on investment.
Changes needed: 1) US high school track & field, drop 1600m & 3200m. Add 1500m & 3000m.
2) Drop US high school 5000m XC. Add 3000m XC for boys and girls.
3) Drop college 6000m XC, 8000m XC and 10000m XC. Add 5000m XC for men and women.
US high school and college XC and T&F have been catering to desires of 5000m to Marathon runners. It's over for those events. US is too far behind in 5000m to Marathon to continue status quo.
