It looks like Sage managed to mobilize a granola bar/social media millennials army of his faithful and sensitive supporters to write all these flowery posts. Show must go on and it's less and less about running.
On the contrary, it started out about running, and the trolls made it crappy and personal. Why not make it about running again?

What do you mean by everyone? Both get a lot of hate and some love, I would say it's a similar proportion.
Also both goals are pretty unrealistic, but Gwen's has to be even crazier if she really believes it.
The 100km is definitely contested more since it is a IAAF world event. All this ultra stuff is of course very niche though. I believe the 100km record is 6:13?...by Japan's Takashiro Sunada...who was a 2:12 marathoner? (Correct me if I'm wrong). Totally legit. Like i said earlier I think the 50km record and the 50-mile record are also quite strong.... I think the 100-mile record is actually the "weakest" out of all these records. I'm not going after the 50km record because I think one needs to be in sub 2:16:00 shape at the bare minimum and I'm probably not hitting that again. Since the US/UK is unfortunately very non-metric the 100-mile distance does carry a lot of weight though. In ultra running the longer events generally get a lot of attention (i.e. Western States in the US....UTMB in Europe). However, I will say that the most competitive MUT races this year would probably go: Comrades, IAU 100km worlds, UTMB, Zegama, Ring of Steall, Mont Blanc Marathon etc... So for sure 100-milers aren't usually the "most competitive" in the whole realm of MUT....UTMB traditionally has a lot of depth though! I believe Geoff Burns has a marathon PR of 2:24. He has run great at 100km and 50-miles on the roads. Max King (always an #AnySurfaceAnyDistance guy I totally respect) won the world 100km and ran pretty fast in 6:27....the next year we ran Comrades together and he had a pretty rough race there the first time since it was an "up year"...but since he is a 2:14 marathoner I think his 100km on the roads correlates pretty well. He also did quite well at Zegama earlier this year but then had some issues at Sierre-Zinal/Pikes Peak (which I can totally relate to!). The issue with the Worlds 100km is that usually it has been contested in hot conditions...and not the fastest courses. Max ran his 6:27 to win in some pretty non-ideal conditions. Again, I think quite a few guys who have even run sub 2:25 could get this 100-mile record....not many will try though. Maybe some sub 2:16 guys couldn't get it though. Sometimes the 2:30 marathoner beats the 2:20 marathoner in these crazy long ultra events. I'd say a guy who runs 2:15 and trains 140mpw would have an advantage though...esp if they did specific Long Runs over 25-28 miles and dialed in their fuel/nutrition. Having great Running Economy at 6:52/mile pace is also quite key.
One slight correction, the hundred kilometer record was recently broken this year. By Nao Kazami a 2:17 marathoner.

The MUT races you list have no African athletes. Wouldn't you include the mountain running world championships in that list? Gray from USA is probably toughest USA mountain guy as far as versatility when is steep or rugged and also has competed well internationally yet he was only 4th! He has beaten the top USA and European guys time and time again and the Ugandans ahead of him are definitely stronger than any of the Athletes you mentioned at those other races. If you look at the guys just behind Gray they too are world class mountain guys competing at high level above what you see at ring of steall or mont blanc marathon. Only real elite at mont blanc was kilian. The rest of field wasn't even in the race.
Sierre Zinal was great, got to watch Gray and King race yet both had bad races, Gray was in front however. Sage do you train with Gray ever? Would think if you 2 guys train together, Europe would stand no chance!
Sage your best videos are the otq series. Can you do a sim8lar series for this?
I would love a daily vlog.
Thanks for the reply and for the insight. Agree to almost everything you say.
The only thing I don't accept as an argument is the 100k Worlds. The conditions don't really matter in a championship race, do they? Unless what you're saying is you are bad in the heat, but I don't believe you are. I'd say unless you're close to the WR (6:09 and certainly much better than the 2:17 marathon by the same guy) it's only about the place.
Good luck for the track 100 miler, please prove me wrong and get the record!
It seems like a strong record, if I remember correctly about the money they offered to break it last time? I hope you stomp all over it!
i dont believe you will get the record or get an Olympic qualifying time as i believe your training is sub optimal for both. if you truly wanted a Olympic qualifying time you would of spent the 28 months that qualification is open focused solely on that. (at least until you got the time which you have done twice in 13 (i think) attempts
I believe in you Sage. You are a true leader of letsrun. Are you related to JF Kennedy by any chance? I know you can do it. I can't wait to see you get this 100 mile wr and Bekele the wr for the thon.
and of course he pulled out of the event
reason?

In his last video he said he injured his MCL during his last trail race.
any update on the attempt ?

Here's a few:
1. Sage got beat by a girl at comrades.
2. Sage training has been slacking.
3. He won't do well at Western states.

Sage can get it easily.

Can get easily what exactly?
Sage is not exactly great when it comes to 100 milers.

This guy is annoying. Constantly chasing weak events and for fame. He isn't even competitive in terms of the top USA sub ultra and ultra guys anymore so now he moves to an obscure event to garner notoriety. Kinda like Camille "I make up my own injuries and diagnose myself" Herron. These are 2 clowns that are great social media wise but actually not good athletes. They simply search for the smallest pond to be the biggest fish at.
And Rupp gets bashed for being the opposite. Letsrunners are idiots.
Or maybe they just want a happy medium instead of one extreme or the other?
