conditions matter - a lot! wrote:
If Kiptanui ran that with better pacing and 45 degree, low wind conditions the that would explain why he ran 2:05:39 there.
Rupp ran Prague in 65+ degree conditions and there were poor pacemaking strategies for making a fast time trial type run. Remember, people were throwing surges in the beginning.
Letsrun says about Rupp's 2:06:
http://www.letsrun.com/news/2018/05/galen-rupp-runs-20607-smash-pb-win-prague-marathon/"Conditions were good for running in Prague (56 degrees at the start, 63 at the finish, sunny with minimal wind)"
And yes, first trying to catch the early leader, then 2 (?) surges.

For all the hype this guy gets, he ranks 175th overall in the marathon. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/mmaraok.htmSimilar case for Molly Huddle - 34 years old.. running her whole life and still pretty pathetic in the marathon
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/wmaraok.htmKey takeaway: US Distance running is mediocre
Are you serious?
Molly Huddle is just now starting to tackle the marathon. Do you not remember she has a NR in both the 10,000 and half marathon and use to hold the NR in the 5000. She is 16 best 10000 of all time and once you take away easy Africans and the doped Chinese, she is second to Paula Radcliffe all time. Say what you want 2 years from now when she takes a national record over her fourth distance.
I love all the talk of potential and "easily a 2:04 at Berlin" or whatever. Given that, I was a heck of a lot faster when I was competitive, too! Thanks!
Fact is, Rupp is a 2:12 guy back when the WR was a 2:08. It is what it is. Heck, a 2:12:12 was good enough for Bikila in 1964, wasn't it?

Well, maybe you learned something today.
Marathons are not about running fast, they are about winning.
For the regular runners, even the regular world class runners, they are about winning.
For the historical class runners, who are few and far between, and have moved beyond mere wins at the world level, they are about setting records.
Dibaba and Kipchoge are in this rarified class.

This thread is ridiculous. Galen and Molly are great runners. They compete on a global stage and are competitive for podium spots almost any time they compete.
This is ridiculous for Molly. She is a great national runner. She regularly wins races against Americans, and has set several American records. However, she is not a great international runner. She does not compete for podium spots in Oly/WC/DL races. The one time she was close, she gave it away to Emily Infeld by celebrating too early. She only has two DL podium finishes. One, a third in the 3000 in London in 2013, does not count; the field was so stacked with Americans that seven of the top ten finishers were Americans. That leaves her with one real DL podium finish.
Exaggerating Molly's record is an insult to those American women who are competitive internationally, such as Simpson and Rowbury and Flanagan. They win medals and races, and regularly make the podium. Molly does not.

This is silly. Without the east Africans to pace her in Rio, Huddle's PB is 30:47.59, which isn't even fastest by an American running without African pacemakers. That honor goes to Shalane, who ran 30:34:39 at Payton Jordan. That times also puts her behind a bunch of Europeans. I'll let you decide where exactly, since I'm sure many of them don't "really" count.

You are a moron that needs to learn how to spell the correct words within the English language and he TOTALLY schooled the very similar moronic OP.
Rupp is 24th in the 10K. Given that he is strength runner, he is capable of moving up on the marathon list.
Shalane is better than Molly wrote:

without the East Africans pacing her? yes, they carried her along the whole race, she wasn't running it on her own. pacing my a$$, she earned it. why don't you try it with pacers at your local 5k? that's right, they'd drop you in a second as you couldn't hang on. stay on the curb loser.

THIS. Everyone always likes to say how mediocre Rupp is, how slow he is, whatever. But no one has an answer to why all these "great" runners don't beat Rupp when they race. If you listen to the Rupp haters, he should be finishing dead last in every race!
RUPP is king!

How do you think he'll do in the Berlin Marathon against Kipchoge and Kipsang this weekend?

If by 24th you meant 15th then you would be correct. The longer the distance the better he is so he may go up to 5th-8th in the half, and top 3-4 in the full.

Why always the need on this board to put Galen Rupp down? Alright he's no Mo Farah. He's no Bekele. He's no Kipchoge. He's no Kipsang either.
But he's alright, and as average as he might seem up against these other heroes, he's still the best the USA has got - even if he's got no heart if the conditions aren't 100% right - so you guys should just get right behind him and cheer him on for doing his best (when he actually runs or doesn't DNF).
He has a better 10 k PR than most of these guys. Bekele not included.
What a stupid list! Any race that accepts Boston (2011) with or without a star should also include Kipchoge's 2:00:25.
That alone makes your moronic tirade unintelligible.

His DNF in Boston was a lot worse than finishing outside the top 3.
