Sweet potatoes about a dozen of them.

Ha, that would be second course maybe, before I ran in to a beehive dripping with honey but after I found some fresh laid eggs and a nice Teflon pan to poach them in.

And you could gnaw on them in silence while the successful hunters took turns with your woman, who is ecstatic.

Wondering if anyone here 30+ has been able to lose weight AND continue moderate alcohol consumption. I want to lose a little weight in order to run faster, but I'm not willing to give up one of life's pleasures (a cold beer after a hard workout, glass of wine with dinner, tying one on very occasionally with friends, etc.) in order to do it. Definitely willing to cut in other areas, like solid food diet, however.
Female, 42, 5’11”, 145 lbs. The weight’s a little misleading because I’ve always been v. skinny but have dense bones and so weigh more than what you’d guess. I drink 2-3 beers 4-5x a wk. I run 50 trail mi/wk, plus weights and a couple of CrossFit-type workouts. My rule of thumb is 1 dreadmill mile per 1 beer on top of the regular schedule.
My metabolism didn’t slow down at 30, but it did around 40. I dropped dessert from my diet and stayed thin. Last year after major surgery and 2 mths’ forced bed rest, though, I put on 15 lbs and had a hard time losing it. I finally went on an actual diet: got a bathroom scale, an app to track calories in vs. out, and switched to beer that was lower in sugar. I try not to eat grains because my body doesn’t like them, but that’s also an effective way to keep your blood sugar on an even keel, which makes you less likely to overeat.
When they came for my cheesecake, I said OK. When they came for my nice, full Hefe and gave me a lighter Pilsner instead, I wasn’t thrilled but eventually said OK, too. When they came back for the Pilsner, I said no way and put a treadmill in my study.

Losing weight and then maintaining a healthy weight is easy at hell.
Eat a healthy anti-inflammatory plant-based diet. Fish should be your primary meat.
Do not drink alcohol. Do not eat pork. JFL @ anyone who isn't straightedgemaxxing and halalmaxxing in 2018.

[quote]What's an example of an HIIT workout? How would you fit that into a typical training week of mileage, tempo runs, and long runs?
Try 2 HIIT a wk and not on tempo run days. If you don’t currently lift or do explosive training other than sprints, start with a simple tabata: that’s 20 sec all out effort (AMRAP), 10 sec rest for 4 minutes straight.
Pick a body weight exercise with an explosive element that you hate more than anything else, and do that. For me it’s burpees, plank jacks, or a handbuzz saw plyometric on a speed ladder (or whatever patterned surface you’ve got handy). Effectiveness depends on whether you’re giving it all you’ve got. If you’re able to do it every day, or if you’re not hating every second by minute 3, you’re not working hard enough.
I do mine on my 2 long run days. I run in the a.m., then fit in lifting and HIIT late afternoon or eve.
the easiest way to lose weight is to do the opposite of starve yourself.
never be hungry. hunger is the enemy.
eat good, healthy foods until you are full. that is all. it doesnt get much easier than that.
don't make excuses for eating crap (its a reward, its a cheat day) and don't drink your calories, then watch the weight fall off.
it really is that simple.
you're welcome.

Three hundred and thirty six foot one is much too tall to only weigh 173 lb.

I will get back to you. Trying to maneuver the butt ugly mind-numbing machine into Current Husband’s man cave. We’re at a stalemate. His designation of Current Husband may just be on the table next. Desperate times etc.
I just went from 153 lbs to 145, age 31, I'm 5'11. I've been in the low 150's for years and years. Til now.
I went whole food plant based. No refined sugars, no oils. Only processed foods: whole grain bread, whole grain pasta, plant milks, tofu, tempeh.
Don't starve yourself. Eat as much fruit and vegetables as you want. Watch the nuts/nut butters (have them only once a day). Don't have too much avocado. Maybe a couple days a week. If you are hungry, eat fruit/munch on veggies. Smoothies are great too.
If you need recipe ideas, the Thug Kitchen series of cook books is great. So is the Great Vegan Protein book.
Do all of you have sedentary jobs?
If you do things like clearing forests, building trails, building houses, and running an hour or two a day, you shouldn't have any trouble keeping the extra weight off.
One thing I'll add regarding "cheating a bit."
When I did this, I was worried about protein intake, as well as micronutrient levels, so I tracked everything in Chronometer for a few weeks.
One weekend I ate a bag of chips to myself. It raised the percentage of calories from fat for the week by several percent.. maybe 5%. One bag of chips, and suddenly 5 more percent of my calories are from fat. So yeah, cheating a bit sounds like not a big deal, but if you do the math, a high fat meal can really screw up your macros for days. You climb out of the hole and with one easy jump you are right back in it... so go completely clean for a few weeks. Don't cheat. Cheat meals are for those trying to maintain, not lose weight.
32 losing weight has not been very hard to be honest.
Starting running again, playing hoops and ultimate frisbee, don't hit the pizza buffet as hard as I used to.
I run like 20 mpw. 10 mpw easy, 10 "tempo" high intensity high heart rate effort. The hoops and frisbee I play 2x per week and play hard...to exhaustion.
Still drink plenty of craft beer including getting hammered at least once per week.
Pounds have been falling off...about 20 in 6 months. I'm sure I could do better diet-wise but for now this is working. Don't overthink it.
Move, play hard, get decent sleep, don't engorge yourself. Could probably run 17:30 5k on my 20 mpw. Before I started running again was probably at 25 min 5k fitness. Cardio where you are actually sweatin' does help A LOT.

Yes, we do. You may have heard of a post-industrial society? We’re it.
I live in the desert. Couldn’t clear a forest if I were so inclined to after 6 years of post-grad education. My trails have been, um, built. As has my house.
‘ppreciate the input, though.
Try a little more f*#king and a little less eating.
Classy.
Try a little more food. Might improve your reading comprehension.
No, don't starve yourself.
Instead focus on gaining muscle mass.
The muscles will continue to burn energy even when not working out.

I think the answer to your question is yes. Calories in/calories out might be right, but it seems at least in my case that I'm eating less than I did in my 20s and exercising more yet gaining more weight. Metabolism has to play a function here..
Self deception is one of the most powerful things in the world, it even convinces people that fundamental physical laws such as the First Law of Thermodynamics are broken. You are eating more than you realize, fact.
