Thats nonsense. It does not mess up your stride and the dragging along by the belt part is just something you should ignore when people comment it.
I don't know for sure why they always like treadmill, but heres some reasons they might:
They like to control their training, by using a treadmill they can run intervals at a certain pace without going too fast and too slow, also when you're used to it its kinda easier mentally. You're just zoning out and letting your legs do the work.
Regarding stride...it only messes with your stride if you do your track workouts there, which very few does.
Marius Bakken (13:06) stated he got a more efficient stride after he started doing treadmill workouts.
