The rumors are true and it looks like the days of free rankings have officially come to an end for stats gurus out there (despite Athletic.net claiming for years that rankings would be "FOREVER FREE"). Between parents, athletes, and other coaches, I'm often asked the question "Is Athletic.net or Milesplit better?" Here are the fruits of my research.
While cross country rankings are oftentimes arbitrary, there is a certain sense of security and enjoyment of watching the progress of your athletes as well as the other athletes in your district, region, state, and in some years even nationally. While taking a gander at the national rankings, Milesplit has a top 50 anchored by Zach Kreft's 14:29.95 while Athletic.net has Kreft at 14:30.0 (it appears Athletic.net's system isn't capable of a hundredths place). Immediately, I've already noticed some questionable marks in Athletic.net's top 10. Isaac Cassidy who's tied for 10th in the nation with Cole Sprout ran a 14:49 in a dual meet in a JV race while his race the previous week was a 14:24 in a 3200 meter race. On top of that, Jack Landgraf and Anthony Grover who are ranked 5th and 7th in the nation in Athletic.net's 5K rankings are also erroneous as evidenced by a simple google search as well as knowledge of the fact that CA typically races 3 miles (source:
). In contrast, Milesplit's rankings are anchored by Kreft, Mwaura, Hasty, Sprout, Troutner, McLeod, Bowers, Harrison, Horter, and Cheeseman (all notable names in HS running). To top it all off Milesplit actually goes and covers meets onsite (big or small) in almost every state in the country.
Conclusion: Between Athletic.net's inability to have a hundredths place in their times, three erroneous marks in the top 10 (30% error rate in a sample size that probably garners the most visibility), and higher price point ($48 compared to $95 for coaches or $60 for athletes/parents/fans), and the fact that they actually invest money in recognizing athletes (onsite coverage, articles, etc) Milesplit is the far better deal. Both platforms have free online registration but Athletic.net charges for the premium features while Milesplit's is free.
Winner: Milesplit
