Cain has always had good speed. She should start with 800m races and work her way back up to the 3000m.
Key word had... She got dropped, so fast in a 3k. I think she would have even more trouble keeping contact with the pack in an 800.
as for Cain's future, nobody has a crystal ball, but once you start dropping races it gets in your head. I think this just speaks to where her head is at. I predict if she drops or get destroyed the next couple of races, she'll be officially done.
It's a lot easier to drop out of a 3k 1k in than drop out of an 800m. Considering she has serious speed, I don't know why she didn't do an 800. Yeah, you might lose contact with the pack after a while, but it would have been better for Cain to go out the first 400m with the pack and just try to hang on.
Cain was never really a big 3k runner. Now she did win gold at world juniors at 3k, but that was a tactical 8:58 race and the east africans didn't really seem to be bringing a lot in 2014. She just simply used her 1500m speed and kicked home. She's ran an altitude converted 4:01 1500 indoors, but her 5k PR is only 15:45 (granite she didn't run it that often).
I hope she's able to do some 800's and 1500's this summer, but hoping in a moderately fast 3k is not the best thing mentally or physically if it's your first race back and you're an 800/1500 runner. I don't think she expected the 3k to go this fast. A lot of the girls in the field had solid PB's. Sisson was really pushing the pace. Maybe she thought it would be an 8:55 race with the back of the pack coming in at 9:05 and she could come through in 9:10 for a solid season opener. 9:10 would have been solid.
