Was Bill Clinton in attendance?
1/10 waste of our time.
I also think they were correct to DQ Kejelcha and not Barega. But, IMO, if Kejelcha did not grab Barega's shorts, intentionally or not, he would not have been DQ'd. It was deemed incidental contact, happens often. Kejelcha's only 20, he's a kid. I'll give him a pass. That said, I'll say two other things: I think he did intend to impede Barega and the entire incident was his fault. Just my opinion.
The leading runner can never foul a following runner if they are not making sudden lane changes. If Kejelcha' back kick is the 'cause' that means that Beraga was in the space that Kejelcha 'owns' and is interfering with Kejelcha. Beraga HAS to leave the leading runner enough space. The is more egregious because Beraga has the whole track to use but instead he is running in the middle of Lane 1. You can tell that in the video because the bottom of his feet are not visible when they are on the track because the railing is blocking our view of them. You can see a substantial portion of Lane 1 outside of where Beraga's feet are landing. I really cannot fathom how you think his back kick hitting Beraga is Kejelcha's fault. You CANNOT run up on a runner and interfere with their their running.
I hear what you're saying. If so, then why wasn't Barega DQ'd? If the leading Kejelcha couldn't foul Barega, then it had to be that Barega was the one responsible for the contact and should have been DQ'd. Barega should have been deemed to be "in Kejelcha's space" and DQ'd also. I don't understand the ruling.
Kejelcha was impeded by Barega with approx 200 remaining, almost causing him to fall, grabbed Barega's shorts, to which Barega, justifiably, pushed him away.
Initially, Barega accidently clipped Yomif's heels, and should have left more space, but Yomif's pulling Barega's shorts was a red card.
Barega justifiably incensed after the race, because I think he would have had more leg speed in home straight. Could have been a 12.59 victory.
There will be no love lost in future encounters between those two.
Kejelcha did not trip and totally lose his balance in mid air for no reason. Neither the track nor the railing reached up into mid air to grab his legs and knock them from under him. The only cause of those things was Beraga, which is noted in Kejelcha's statement above.
Additionally, the only reason Kejelcha tried to grab something to lessen the severity of his fall was BECAUSE he was falling so badly, as a result of Beraga knocking his legs from under him. As Kejelcha stated, had he not instinctively grabbed at Beraga's shorts, he almost certainly would have fallen into his legs, and likely a more serious fall and injury to himself.
We can all thank Kejelcha for attempting to lessen the damage to himself from the fall caused by Beraga, not only to himself but also to Beraga. That he says they are good friends is a huge plus to this matter. Hopefully they can work this out between themselves and avoid such collisions in the future.
This reminds me of a mile race in which I was leading all the way attempting to burn out the kick of a friend who was slightly faster than me at the time. He followed quietly right behind me all the way, until the middle of the last curve when he swung wide and attempted to pass.
As he came beside me, I likewise sped up, putting my full effort into the effort. He got only a foot or so ahead of me, not nearly enough to pass, but I was incredulous as he continued moving over right into my space. Pushing on his shorts did no good, and he ended up right in front of my chest. I momentarily avoided tripping on him, as our strides moved in unison, and then I went down, flipping over on the track.
I got back up and ran in behind him, furious and fuming, but holding my tongue. The quick thinking meet referee came out and walked us both around the track, one of us on each side of him, and then made a mistake, asking us to shake hands. My friend reached out his hand, but hadn't apologized, and having suggested the incident was my fault. I refused, looked him in the eyes and said, "you're a SOB, (name)."
We had trained together often, traveled to the meet together, but parted ways from that moment, and were never again friends. I was in my mid 20's then, many decades ago. In retrospect I could have done a few things differently. I could have been more active at fending him off, which I later learned to be. Maybe I could have been more accepting of what happened, and could have been gracious and forgiving. Regardless whether that friendship would have lasted, I could have handled myself with more dignity.
If Alberto has been there, he would have filed a protest.
And IAAF would have DQ'ed an unrelated NIke-sponsored runner.
And six months later, they would issue a statement that the officials go confused because they were wearing the same singlets.
The funniest thing about this is the reported ages of all of these guys. The E. Africans are shameless liars. It's astounding.
