Concur that this was OSU's 3rd NCAA championship in baseball in 12 years. 12 years ago, it was a "Cinderella" story.
Unfortunately, OSU still has no men's XC or Track teams after 30 years, and the women's teams are weak in the Pac-12.
The University of Oregon re-started their baseball program a few years ago (with a new stadium), due in-part to the recent success of OSU's baseball team.
The NCAA started a regional competition about 10 years ago to promote more head-to-head competition to advance people to nationals. This was also intended to be like a playoff tournament for individuals and relay teams, etc. Initially they had 4 regions, but it was difficult to balance out the depth of competition in the 4 regions (one complaint was schools in the NE have a shorter outdoor season), so it's now 2 regions for the Eastern and Western US. Lots of coaches don't like this as it lengthens the season and adds to the travel expenses, so this may change again.
