The problem is not just the day to day stress, but he cumulative toll over the course of the summer. I was out running at 6:00 am on Friday, with a 6:25 sunrise. Light was coming over the horizon, but no direct sun for the first half hour or so. Got in 16.5 miles. Took in 6 pounds or so of fluids, but was still down 5 pounds when I weighed myself after my run. That means 12 pounds of fluids and associated electrolytes were lost. I took in a 32 ounce Powerade, a 28 ounce Body Armour, a 24 ounce chocolate milk, some water and 6 salt/electrolyte capsules, so I may have made up most of the electrolytes for that day, but the constancy of the fight to keep up just wears you down. I can't win when I'm losing 6-7% of my body weight on just one run.
Smoove, my friend, I feel you on this. 6 pounds of fluids is SIX PINTS. That's a half gallon plus a quart, if I'm not wrong. Crazy. You're right. We can't win if that's what it takes. Something has to give, and will give.
Just for the heck of it, I dug back into my Garmin training log. June 7, 2009. At 7:15 AM, age 51, I went out on the same course I ran this morning and ran 15 miles in 2:08:26, for an average pace of 8:34--very good for that time of the year--at an average HR of 148, which at that point was just under 75% of max. Completely aerobic. First mile at 9:12, last mile at 8:12.
So: a man 9 years younger than I am now. That's it, right? It was just an age thing.
No. I went to weatherunderground.com and found the weather. It wasn't "dry," but it was much, much dryer than the run I took this morning, and that, along with the cooler temperatures, made a LOT of difference. Dewpoints were 57-60%.

Notice that the skies were clear. So there was bright sun by midpoint in the run. But with cooler skies and especially with lower, non-steamy humidity, there was no danger zone.
I still say that there's some sort of bad mojo going on when you pump that humidity high at temperatures of 70+. I've had some great runs on drizzly 60 degree days. That 100% humidity, but it just doesn't feel that bad. Many years ago, people here at LR hipped me to the dewpoint and the way that it degrades performance. I always knew they were right, but the lesson is coming home to roost right about now, along with a long of cranky chickens.
