I ran at Hammond in 75-76 for Coach Candiano, who asked me to go out for cross country after I ran a 9:03 for 1.5 miles at PE one day... I just marveled at what Rudy, Cary and Tim were doing. Rudy would routinely run home from meets, even if they were 10+miles away. Very un-assuming, sort of the antithesis of Pinkowski. Tim was the "Hippy" free thinker of the bunch - his twin brother Tom was a very good wrestler. Tim passed away a few years ago, sadly. I think RUdy is still in Oregon working for Nike(?), and Pink is the RD for the Chicago Marathon. Great memories..!
More stories please! What was Candiano like? How did he get 3 kids to accept and handle such crazy training? Any details surrounding Rudy's epic 28:32 that year? How did he avoid injuries running with such a workload? What was the rest of the team like and how did they train?
I talked to Dan's wife years ago in her classroom at Hammond High and she seemed to relay that it was all a bunch of craziness that was bound to implode. Did Candiano leave after Rudy graduated?
And what an unlikely place - Hammond High. Industrial town in the shadow of Chicago, but not a part of it. No track at the high school(!) and no welcoming training sites.
