And how did Pritikin die? Suicide at 69 due to despair of multiple cancers, after decades of eating a tasteless, miserable diet in the name of "longevity". Meanwhile Jeanne Calment was eating eggs and chocolate, drinking wine and smoking on her way through a life of 122 years.
Diets too low in fat and cholesterol have higher mortality due to cancer. A lot of current vegans and vegetarians are going to get a nasty surprise when they find out they have been duped into "plant-based" propaganda, and don't outlive their parents' "unhealthy" lifespan.
And there are also people that smoke all their lives and never get lung cancer. And contrary to popular belief, people who eat a plant based diet and meat sparingly do not get cancer at higher rates than those who don't. In fact, the opposite appears to be true, in particular breast, and colon cancer. There are several studies on the Pritikin website that one can review to get a broad based understanding of the relationship. Genetics plays a big role but even if you're not a genetically endowed, one can mitigate the onset of disease by modification of known risk factors for said disease and mitigate the progression if you already have it. Particularly the lifestyle related ones. Pritikin had been in remission from a very aggressive form of Leukemia for over 25 years which at the time was unheard of. Whether his diet and exercise habits played a role is uncertain but it would not surprise me. He was also diagnosed with severe CAD in his 40's, which is when he began researching diet and other lifestyle modification to mitigate his risk and disease progression. The result was the Pritikin Program. At autopsy his coronary arteries were completely clear, the results of which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. He did in fact, commit suicide following a recurrence of his Leukemia. He checked himself into a hospital in Albany NY and ended up in kidney failure, on dialysis, and in extreme pain. He asked his wife to get him a drink, when she left the room he slit the arteries in both antecubital spaces and bled out. Despite his method of dying, the program has been a huge success, helping thousands of people over the years mitigate their risk of the development of cardiovascular diseases, certain forms of cancer, diabetes and hypertension, and while not in Santa Monica anymore, is still in existence.
