When the US switched from English to metric tracks in the late 70s, here's what occurred:
100 yard dash became 100m dash (8.55 longer)
220 yard dash became 200m dash (1.17m shorter)
880 yard run became 800m run (4.67m shorter)
Mile run became 1600m run (9.34m shorter)
2 mile run became 3200m run (18.68m shorter)
The HS federation was trying to keep the races similar in length across the board.
The 1500m run is 109.34m shorter than the previous mile race.
Which is closest to the original? 9.34m or 109.34m?
The 1500m is the race that should be gotten rid of. The IOC should have run the 1600m from the beginning.
Here's the thing: the original track used for the 1896 Olympics (Panathenaic Stadium) is 204m long which is almost exactly 1/8 mile. So, the excuse that people always give for the 1500m is that tracks back then were 300 or 500 in size. WRONG! The original 1500m race would have had to start on the backstretch and was 7 1/2 laps. They should have just run 8 laps and done a 1600m or even a mile.
Looks like the IOC has been making poor decisions from the start.
