Anyone remember what Tiger looked like then? That was before he bulked.
He was a tall beanpole. No bulk at all. I worked at a very exclusive So Cal CC in the mid 90s where Eldrick was an honorary member his last year of HS. He and his Dad (Dad never invited, always invited himself) would show up to practice and play. Educated estimate here, but would put him at 6'1" and no more than 155 dripping wet. Chicken legs and arms. Barely any muscle anywhere. The image still fresh because I worked at the range and used to watch the spindly kid pound ball after ball off the grid. Effortless power.
Fast forward to 3-4 years later. He had left Stanford and turned pro. Me and some buddies went out to watch the Buick (now Farmers) @ Torrey Pines and I caught a glimpse of this tall, bulked out silhouette putting on a green a couple hundred yards from where we stood. With the old image of him still in mind, I said, "No way that's Tiger. That guy is way too big to be him." Sure enough, when we got closer, it was him; now built like an NFL safety. Total transformation. After that day, there was no doubt in mind he had juiced. Funny thing is I'm really not sure it ever helped him. He hit the ball a mile as a 150ish lber and obviously always had the ability. If anything, his infatuation with getting big, trying to train like a Navy seal and working out has exacerbated his injuries and shortened his career.
I'm also pretty sure he ran CC in HS, at least for a year or two.
