I don't think Wightman is the man to breakthrough as a serious medal contender for Britain either, although he is at least consistent. He should make finals, but he's already 22, by which time his illustrious predecessors had already beaten the rest of the world: Cram was World Champ at 22, Ovett was World Cup & European Champ, and Coe had broken 3 WRs.
But it is early season.
I agree with that, but a regular finalist in globals and medals in European and Commonwealths is something that Britain has lacked for a long time now. We need somebody like that to show younger runners coming through that it's possible to mix it with the Africans. Coe and Ovett benefitted from the likes of Brendan Foster, who weren't the best in the world, but were up there mixing with the best.
And he's also faster than Aouita was at the same age.. ;)
