You merely play in the dark. I was born in the dark.
Banal jokes aside, I do probably half of my easy runs at night. I try to stick to back roads with sidewalks and street lights. I tend to run in the street, but hop to the sidewalk the moment I spot a car. I find that I run slower at night perhaps because of the worse visibility, but it makes for some pretty relaxing runs. I think it's great for easy running. I don't like it for workouts, as I can't trust myself to pace as accurately.
Running in the dark sucks. Can't do anything too fast, and many of my usual routes become 'no-go' zones because you're guaranteed to get harassed by a drunk homeless person.

I did it for the first time the other night, I took a LED flashlight and duct tape it to a plastic potato chip bag clip and clipped it to the brim of my cap pointed towards the ground, worked pretty well but had lots of police cruisers followin me around. never seen anyone do this myself but think i might start doin it more often. anyone else try this?
I'd sneak out around 8-9pm at night during my student teaching semester and fell into a somewhat regular routine with night runs years back. I'd run 2-4 miles along a pretty scenic route, maybe a lil buzzed too and it was amazing. My schedule was much different 7-8 years ago though. I found running at night while crazy euphoric, I'd be wired well past midnight, and that doesn't work so well now with a family and kid. Fasted cardio in the AM now while it's dark is pretty cool, or after work. Always find a way though.
I ran a 1 mile rolling loop around my neighborhood at 4am which is dark enough to pass as "night time". The tranquility that I experienced is making me itch to go to bed early tonight to do it allover again tomorrow!
Of course I'd rather run during daylight hours! I actually don't even like wearing a headlamp, but it's the most practical way to light up the way at night. It's a luxury for me during a big part of school year though, since I have long days at university. I'm used to it though, and haven't had any major mishaps besides falling on snow a few times. Is falling in the dark something you really worries you?
I havent done any late night runs, however I have gone for a few early morning (3-4am) runs when I can't sleep

No need to fear! Wear your sunglasses at night...;)
All year long. And during the Minnesota winter, I wear a $10 Coleman headlamp and yellow velcro reflective armbands.
NightRunner1, me, and Corey Hart do this.
I much prefer early morning 5am runs to late night. Rural roads are especially quiet that time of day and you get rewarded with a sunrise on the way home depending on the time of year and length of run. Speaking of which, I need to get to bed so I can fit in ~8 miles tomorrow before the wife and kids wake up.
