I agree. Yes, it'sannoying when a competitor sits on you. But hey, it's a racing technique.
When it happens, put blinders on, relax, don't get upset, as it waste energy,
The only one to help you during a race is yourself. Preparing mentally is just as important as the run itself.
I think this is a good point for local road racers and sub elites. Working against each other, rather than with each other, will not produce your best race. A few guys pushing each other through the hard part of the race can be a huge help. You can push yourself and those around you to faster times. Because when you are not anywhere close to the leaders and out of the prize money, you and nobody else will care if you got 26th or 51st or 397th. It's the time that you remember now and into the future.
The way that I deal with an annoying drafter is do a slow weave so they have to weave as well to draft off me or slow down the pace a bit and then use a hill, turn, or a tailwind to throw in a burst and drop them.
Although some guys are hanging off the pack becuase they are struggling to keep up. It's not like they are looking for an advantage, but rather doing everything they can to keep up. They don't have the fitness to take the lead.
I think different rules apply for the pros. What's annoying at any level is when a guy that is drafting you so close that it is impeding your stride. Super annoying and unsportsmanlike. Back off a bit, bud.
In this particular case, we are talking about Rupp, who has creates an amazingly unlikeable persona and is surrounded by shady characters, so it's easy to pile it on him.

Tanui was pissed because Geb clipped his heel so he lost his shoe.
People underestimate Rupp, especially his strength. In the French magazine 'Sport & Vie' March/April issue, 2018, (
) the French journalist describes Rupp as a 'skeleton' and he also writes that Rupp has a phobia about muscles. Wrong!
In fact, under Salazar's tutelage, Rupp and also Farah, have been lifting heavy for years, and it shows.
If you look at Rupp's physique closely, he looks like a body builder, with smaller versions of the same muscles. Perfectly proportioned small size pecks, abs (but less visible than Farah's) and -especially -phenomenally developed calf muscles, which would do Chris Froome proud.
Rupp is no skeleton, he has a perfectly harmoniously developed physique, but his b.f. percentage is so low that it might not be apparent at first glance. Compared to Harald Norpoth, the famous 1500/5000 runner from the 60's Rupp is built like a monster.
Real thin runner ? Hans J.Orthmann, Germany, from the 70's and John Treacy, Eire...who is still rail thin, unlike his compatriot, Ray Flynn.
