I agree. I like the simplicity of this statement.

Great Observation! Ryun was AMAZING! His work outs were untouchable. 10 Mile warm up at 6:00 pace; then 20x400 @ 70 sec. than a 3 mile cool down. Unreal

Americas Golden age of the Mile. Jim Ryun of the 60's and early 70's? Steve Scott late 70's and 80's or Matt Centrowitz of today? just the 3 of them? who would win? are there any other prominent American Milers you would put in this field? please don't mention One and Done milers. Folks with some proven longevity.
Jim Ryun wins it with a last lap of 49 to 50 seconds after gradually accelerating the pace on the three prior laps.

Look I am a Matt fan and I don't consider him a cheater, but I do feel he's gained the scientific edge by being on the slab in the lab of FrankenAlberto.
Not sure if that’s fair. He was a bronze medalist his senior year of college prior to Alberto.

First, to answer the question posted in the Subject.
I think Ryun and Scott would be close, with the nod to Ryun, Centro in 3rd. I also think there's too many off-tangent counterpoints....almost as if people assume one runs his WR or PB every race; running one's WR or PB every race is not reality.
I add Jim Spivey to the mix, because of his international resume...have him duel Centro for #3.
This would make one interesting research-statistical analysis project...develop formulas to rate strength of race, final lap, average sub-4 mile for each runner, etc.

Ummmm ever.... heard of Jordan Hasay
Lets just remember that Webb has the fastest
800m Mile, 2 mile 5k and 10k of the group.
Webbs peak > everyone else's peak
Also for those that bring up Webb's 3:30 that was THE FASTEST 1500m run during 2007.. That he achieved while racing.
Centro's 3:30 came from a 10th place finish at Monaco.....
Here's another to consider. A real Dream Mile. And winner

Exceptional genetics. ?

Ryun had the rare gift of being able to train ridiculously hard without getting injured.
There’s only what is:
3:46.91 Alan Webb (Nike) 07/21/07
3:47.69 Steve Scott (Sub 4) 07/07/82
3:48.38 Bernard Lagat (Nike) 07/29/05
3:48.83 Sydney Maree (Athletic Attic) 09/09/81

Remember this Webb and Centro grew up in a time when their whole career is online, and they have been in the spotlight alot more then Scott or Ryun.
Ryun was waaaaaaay more in the spotlight than Webb, Centro, and Scott combined. He was on the cover of sports illustrated 7 times, including once as a high school student. He was a household name.

So trite.
Support.
---Marcus makes an interesting argument for Webb.
Head to head, each in prime, access to modern shoes and training:
Ryun>Webb=Lagat=Scott>Centro.
The image quality is poor, but this was a fine race:

Yeah, why aren't people including Sydney Maree if they're going to consider Bernard Lagat? He was far more American than Lagat.
Tactical race - my gut says Centro
balls to the wall race - I'd bet on Ryun or Webb
