To say that Lagat could have run 2:04 in his prime is a ridculous statement.
Surprised Geb hasn't been mentioned.
World indoor champion at 1500m (3:31 indoor PR) --> world record setter at marathon + a heck of a lot in between.
Mary Decker
Kenenisa Bekele has the greatest range.
Mo Farah has better range than Lagat.

Lagat is still racing, and Webb is still taking Propecia.
Webb's range was much greater than Lagat's range.
Not sure what they are running currently has to do with anything. Lagat would have to somehow lower his 800m time (obviously not possible), drop a stellar half marathon, or run a very solid marathon for him to have better range than Webb.
Link to Webb's half marathon and marathon PRs?

Farah is a few seconds slower than Lagat at 1500m.

Bekele obviously had the best range. His 3:32 is sublime, and is close to the world record. He is equally as far off 1500m and marathon world records(6 seconds). I don't think he is into 1500m unfortunately, but I look forward to him destroying the marathon this year. I'm always wondering what he has done for 800m. He must have done 800's before he became famous? He could have been 1:40-1:45, who knows.
hahaha. LOL
this thread needed this post. well done, PoTD

Abderrahim Goumri:
1500 - 3:39.80
3000 – 7:32.36
5000 – 12:50.25
10,000 – 27:02.62
Half M – 1:01:19
Marathon – 2:05:30 (former Moroccan record)
I didn't realize just how fast the late Abderrahim Goumri was over several distances. His 5000 is smoken and he's faster than Mo in the 3000, 5000 & marathon! I think Goumri's versatility has to be considered in this discussion. That 5000 & marathon are impressive. A real smoker!

? didn't he failed a drugs test?
I typed fail and Android did the rest.
I was just reviewing the career of Eamonn Coghlan, didn't know (or remember) he ran 2:25 for the marathon, NYC '91.
3:51 (out, 3:49 indoor)
13:19
28:19
2:25
Kenya to USA is pretty good range

It was a passport sanction for hematological anomalies announced in 2012. Sadly, he died in car crash the following year.
utter nonsense
1'44.86 is a 1'44-guy
you clearly didn't see the race
it was wild with 49.98 at bell !!!
only yego chased pacer but faded befor ismail took big lead, but then Rudisha/Asbel/Choge made charges in last 100 -200, but the latter 2 made their charges too late & Choge eased off towards the finish when he knew he had no chance of the win
if he'd run hard to the line, Choge wouda run ~ 1'44.5
race was run by Rudisha in 1'44.09 when he woud finish off season with 1'42.01 !!!
for Choge to run within 0.77s of a guy who in last race of a long tiring season was capable of 1'42.01 in rieti shows 1'44.86 was nowhere near Choge's limit for 800
if he'd actually chased the clock rather than run too slow to 700m in this wild race, he wouda run
~ 1'44-flat/low
no one frankly cares
what they care about is his limit & Choge certainly couda run ~ 1'44-flat/low on his pb day
they both had 1'42+ intrinisic ability at their peak 800 shape if uninjured & got perfect race in a 1-off, both substantially quicker than what Choge was capable of over 800 but that is no detraction for Choge - he didn't concentrate on 800

Sure, Aouita's 1:43 - 27:30 is great,
but 1:44 - 59:30 for Choge??????
Choge never made a serious attempt at 10k, but I can guarantee he could have run 27-low, maybe even 26 high with the kind of range he had.
3:29 15 speed, 59:30 half endurance??
He could be as good as Geb at the 10k
No way Aouita runs 59:30
Choge is the range GOAT
Glad to see old trolls like you still on the boards, Bad Wigins.
just as impressive was Choge's 2nd fastest clocking of 1'45.10
that was in shanghai in '09 where he thrashed recently crowned world champ muladzi who ran 1'45.68 !!! & Bungei the olympic champ who was 5th
so, Choge coudn't beat class guys over 800 ???
What about Max King? The guy gets it done from 3k-100km!

Fernando Mamede my number one all time.
he ran the 400 anchor at the olympics in the relay, WR in 10k, bronze world cross, thats 12k.
i think with the fast twitch, he could not take rounds and was left flat, otherwise the guy is a miracle.
however this is about the time when the italians, spanish, morocco and algerians started mega dosing the sauce.
