I like using the Peloton app for cycling over this past winter (I have my own $250 spin bike to use with the app subscription). Today they announced a $4,000 treadmill that will have live classes. I think this is a dumb move for Peloton... I have never participated in a live running class but the concept is a little strange to me

Mile High Run Club has done well with this concept in NYC (have two successful studios and I believe are opening a third), and now Peleton and Equinox are coming in to compete in that market locally. "SoulCycle for running" so to speak.

Gyms have done this for a while. One of their cross fit indoctrinated personal trainers will yell at a bunch of hobby joggers and new year’s resolution chasers for a 45-min “high intensity” interval session. Annoys me because the trainer feels the need to adjust their pace every 2 minutes while screaming instructions. I just want to tell them, it’s really not that complicated!

Peloton is the new Bowflex. People think that they are going to be super fit because they dropped all this money on home exercise equipment, but they will tire of it and in a few years there will be dozens of these competing for bids on ebay and craigslist.

This just sounds like a lot of injuries.

The leader board will be filled with cheaters at the top- they will have the treadmill on full speed and high incline and not running! As an app user I don't have a leader board- but I have read people complaining about others that have re-calibrated their bikes, to hack it so to speak (make the resistance much easier than the numbers on the screen say it is), so they top the leader board. I guess for some people the leader board helps to motivate them- or make them feel better about themselves. I wish they spent more money on creating more content for the app and diversifying the content instead of sinking money into hardware. Would love an on demand rowing class.

No thanks, I'd buy a treadmill with the best hardware best running mechanics. Who cares about the app or live workout crap. How much is a woodway? -

Woodway 4Front is over 11 grand. I'm not in the market for a treadmill, but if this one is high quality I could see it attracting a lot of people on hardware alone. -
Yes I did think a $4grand price point for one with "slats" instead of a belt was interesting. I have run on a slat based Woodway before and really liked it and actually just ran on a Technogym "Skillrun" and thought it was a pretty amazing step forward from the normal treadmills I run on but looked and the Skillrun was $15G! Obviously no way can I justify spending that. Be interesting to see the quality from the Peleton vs. the other two, given the enormous delta in costs.

just an expensive fad. I have now to go and eat my kale.

But what if I can lace up an old dusty pair of running shoes and jump on a beautiful trail for free?
Treadmills are for people in Minnesota . . . in February. -

Strong feeling you're a pot calling the kettle black regarding hobby jogging. Would you mind replying with a link to your pr's? -
I suspect this will be pretty popular. I know a lot of people that don't/won't workout unless there's an instructor (real-or-not) that's yelling orders and encouragement. I can think of several coworkers who fit that category. Many spend some serious dollars on trainers and groups so this might seem like a cheaper alternative to them.
I'm a hobby jogger (17 min masters guy) but I'm not wired that way and I doubt there are many on this site who are. If anything, I need some dude yelling at me to back off. -

Subliminal macho man alert ^^^ -
I do Treadmill HIIT workouts at Orange Theory where everyone can select a speed that will challenge them (based on HR zones). I wonder how the Peloton Treadmill running classes will work. Still, I prefer to go outdoors and to the track to do most of my runs. I will use treadmill if necessary to get runs in but I probably would want to do all of my runs with Peloton.

Correction: .. I probably would NOT want to do all of my runs on Peloton.

I should have been clearer. I've had some small issues that became chronic injuries because I was too stupid to back off. Nothing macho about that. -
In general, I detest the treadmill, and I can see doing it in some kind of group class setting much more motivating than trudging along on my lonesome. I hit the road unless it's pouring rain or under 25 degrees (extremely rare where I live), but if I was living in a smoggy, traffic-filled city, I can see something like this being more appealing.

So many better things to do on a treadmill. I've almost finished both seasons of "Stranger Things" on indoor runs this season. I used to be outside no matter what but this year I've been inside every day below 20F.
