Can you guys just keep it on the Trump inauguration thread? It's really boring when every thread on the board ends up being this endless crap.
mostly agree......except that Trump's tweet clearly illustrates exactly what you are complaining about, so it's not so clear that it was the posters dragging politics into this, Trump very clearly brought politics into it, so discussing politics on the Amtrak thread becomes (somewhat) relevant. We can't really act like this travesty in American politics isn't happening, especially when he is actively forcing the issue by bringing politics into every bit of news.
But yeah, it's not really that useful. If people are still supporting Trump at this point there's not really a point in having discussion...just becomes noise

I think H just froze over. I agree with Trump.
That was all brand new track. Can someone please explain that to Trump.
If that infrastructure plan ever is submitted, it is sure to be designed for maximum kickbacks to business, esp. via privatization of public assets.
It is true, however, that there are massive infrastructure needs, among them to create dedicated higher speed rail tracks throughout the country that won't be continually degraded by sharing them with freight trains.

Strange definition of "needs"...

Agreed. Higher-speed freight might be useful. But higher-speed commuter is just silly in US, except maybe in Acela corridor.
If CA wants to waste their money on bullet trains or hyperloops, let them foot the bill.
A bridge section of I-5 collapsed into a river north of Seattle a few years ago, but infrastructure improvements aren't important.
Train derailments and bridge collapses are part and parcel of living with Eisenhower-era infrastructure.

Dem states just aren't willing to pay themselves, and want big fed$ to boot the bill.

Orrrrrr the money went here:
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/Viaduct/tracking-progressI was hoping to take this train to the UW indoor meets :(
Even if it is up and running by January, I'm not too comfortable being on one of the first few trains to give the track a second try.

Transitdocs.com, a website that maps Amtrak train locations and speeds using data from the railroad’s train tracker app, says Train 501 was going 81.1 mph moments before the derailment Monday.
The state Department of Transportation posted information about the $180.7 million project online that says the maximum speed along that stretch of track is 79 mph.
The "maximum" should have AT LEAST a 10% tolerance for user stupidity.
Me too ;)

Bring a good book or podcast. It'll be rolling along at about 12 mph.

Hey Brojos! Why haven't you banned this shiithead yet?
This is not an overpass, it's an underpass.
An "Overpass" is a structure where the majority of the traffic travels 'over' something else (a river, another road). A "Underpass" is where the majority of the traffic travels 'under' another structure. A structure cannot be both.
Unless there's a heap of train traffic, or no vehicular on the highway, then it's an underpass.

My definition would be that an overpass is something you go under, and vice-versa.
