I've been reading about high HS Mileage. Guys like Gerry, while his numbers may have been over exaggerated still did lots of mileage and so did the early NY HS runners and some still do. Theoretically, how does someone "make the leap" into the high mileage training.
I'm not very talented and haven''t been running long. I went from completely out of shape to a sub-18 5k in a year (2 XC seasons) but I don't think it's very impressive. Frankly I'm not very worried about longevity at this point and would like to become pretty good at the HS level as my ultimate goal.
I've been injured before, I got a mild tibial stress reaction in my first year of running. I think it was mostly attributed to a 10-pound weight loss throughout my first year of running not on purpose but just being more health conscious and naturally burning more calories unknowingly.
If I wanted to make the jump from 50 mpw to like 75+ how would I do it and not get injured? I don't really understand how some people can just ignore the 10% rule or steady progression and be fine? I feel like I get injured when I increase speed more than mileage? Should I slow it down?
