I usually rely on others to let me know when they think I need to reply to a LR post. As head of the program at Loudoun Valley I think I need (again) to defend programs like ours against people who are most likely jealous of what we have built. I was, of course, expecting people to complain about our team but thought it would come after our 15 at the State meet. So, just to set the record straight (again):
1) We don't recruit at Loudoun Valley. I get several calls per month from parents who want to come to our program...in fact I had one today and had another 2 weeks ago. We DO NOT initiate contact with any parent or athlete.
2) The first thing I tell the parent is "If this move (and it has to be a move because our school is at capacity) fails from an athletic standpoint, would this still be the best thing for the student-athlete and the family." If they can convince me that it is, then I hand them off to counselors and/or the athletic director and see if they show up at the first practice.
3) Not sure what to do with parents who want to move to our school district...coaches get bent out of shape when someone else gets a move-in and they think that something is fishy...not so at Loudoun Valley. In fact, we have more kids move to our school district that will never make our top 7...I don't hear any complaints about those kids...???
4) We would have won the NXR SE meet without Sam Affolder AND Connor Wells (note that the runner - Chase Dawson- in 47 place/36 team points) was ours also. Additionally, the guy who most likely would have been our 5th man this year -Jacob Windle - has suffered from an undiagnosed illness this year and unfortunately did not run for us at NXR. We were, and would have been, a very good team without Sam and Connor. We are a deep team.
5) We have a large team (124 this year between girls and boys) but all the great programs have large teams. I am proud that 10% of our school runs Cross Country and why this is held against out program...I don't get that. This should excite people who love our sport. Instead it is almost seen as a negative by jealous coaches.
6) We do not have a Junior high program, nor do 7th and/or 8th graders train with us (against the rules); we do have a County-wide club program (3 days per week) that has helped every Cross Country program within the County. One of our current top 7 boys is a product of this program.
7) We are disciples of TinMan, but have also relied on any and all ideas from a variety of gracious and transparent coaches throughout the country.
8) We do have these advantages over many other programs;
a) Husband-wife team that were both hi-level runners themselves,
b) Country living and, more importantly, great backroads/dirt roads/hilly roads to train on
