A few of my friends have been wondering if we would be allowed to use an ammonia inhalant right before and during a D1 xc race. Has anyone tried this?

If they are still allowed in the Olympics then it's fine.
It might be legal, but I'm pretty sure it's poisonous
I think he's talking about smelling salts. For a race less than a marathon in distance, any boost from smelling salts might be of negligible benefit, and even counter-productive (nausea, queasy, etc.) in excess.
" In 2005, Michael Strahan estimated that 70 to 80 percent of National Football League players were using smelling salts as stimulants."

Maybe for a power lift, or a block off the line their may(?) be a heightened burst of adrenaline....but befor a distance race? Might be kind of like going out too fast, with a mini-crash after 300 meters into it. Now however, if one wanted to keep running the red line, maybe they could try a hit of smelling salts every 1/4 mile in a 5k race. How long would they get before puking, or worse?
I can't remember when they used it in weightlifting at the Olympics(before or after a lift?) but it always seemed odd to see people openly using external aids in competition.
Imagine seeing someone huffing oxygen before a track event.
Wouldn't alkyl nitrites do a better job?

actually this sounds like a fun idea, kind of like a beer mile or something
Lmao “before puking” talk about dramatic. I use smelling salts a few times a week and never had an issue actually they help with nausea not encourage it
