Consult with BYU.....
BYU, where you can't drink and can't have premarital sex...but you CAN, according to Mormon laws or at least Mormon teenagers, engage in sexual intercourse where the man's member is inside but simply not moving and that makes it okay
But that won't cause you to drive your car into a ditch or the infinite number of bad things that can happen when you drink, both short-term and long-term.
Seriously, lower the drinking age? How's that working out in France? http://qlnk.io/ql/59f8d062e4b00814f81b3b59
Dumb idea.
Every person changes 5, 10, 20 years down the line. There's no way to guarantee that today's upstanding mama's boy wouldn't be tomorrow's drunken homeless meth addict. Or vice versa. In my late 30's I know a surprisingly large number of former drug addicts who have gotten their lives together and have gone on to PhDs and business success.
Only someone young with no life experience wouldn't be aware of this fact of circumstantial change. It's a good thing there are a few adults left at your university who recognize this.
Ridiculous that you let 18 year olds drive a car, get married, join the army but can't trust them to enjoy a beer ?
Most people like to enjoy themselves when young stop being a killjoy

Lowering the legal drinking age to 18 would be a bad move in the US IMHO.
I 100% disagree. Personally, I think the age should be 18 or just done away with
(I'd be for doing away with it entirely as I think a big part of too much drinking is rebellion.).
But if you can vote and go to war, you have to have the right to drink. It's absurd that you can die for the country on the battlefield but not be considered a full adult.
I also think the OPs logic is a big dangerous. Orwellian state. You can only do what will maximize life expectancy/productivity, you can't do things just for fun. Where do you draw the line? We don't ban all drivers because some speed. We ban those who repeatedly speed.
If we are going to limit things based on age, why don't we create an age where it's illegal to have sex? I've always wondered that from a logical standpoint. All these people are worried about underage drinking but no one raises an eyebrow about people popping out babies. I'd argue way more harm is done to society from people popping out babies than drinking.
Let the whole old enough to go to war thing have its own thread. I think you are leaving off about half of the population, too. What have all the wars since 1946 been about, exactly?

Insecure people require alcohol in order to have fun because they got nothing going on in their lives and need to brag about the hangover in the next morning class. Even the ones with good grades fall into this category occasionally. Same thing with the smartphone use.
Lol relax. Kids drink alcohol because it's a good time and a huge part of our culture (for better or worse). Trying to claim they do it out of insecurity just makes you come off as someone who never had any fun and tries to compensate by acting like you are superior or something. AKA you are probably the insecure one.
The important thing to remember is that we can arm an 18 y/o and send him off to murder impoverished women and children in some far off country. He might get killed while he's there too.
But that guy can't have a beer in the USA. He might do something crazy!

A prestigious university near me has a serious alcohol abuse problem, like many universities in the developed world. I suggested to a former administrator that they should only select students who do not drink. Students who understand the wisdom - the history of alcohol is the history ruin. This would ensure the university is graduating the right kind of "leaders" and this in turn would benefit society.
The former administrator said no, the university would never do that. They need x number of students that can pay and graduate to meet the budget. They had no other idea to reduce drinking. It's a major problem but I believe my idea is a good one. Does anyone else agree? Any other ideas?
I hear these damn kids today are dancing suggestively too.

It’s a good idea. My university actually has this policy, and it is the biggest reason we are huge favorites at NCAA XC this year.
