I would agree if we ignore the last 3 years. Geddy's voice as painful to listen to. He started doing thi "I'm trying to sing like a really singer thing" it was horrible and jarring . First noticed it at rock n roll HoF performance.
I wonder if you hat played into Peart 's decision to retire.
They still had it on the instrument front though.
The Monkees
Any Monkee fans out there??

Geddy's voice was never that great to begin with. Same with that trademark raspy voice of Axel Rose. Now that they're old farts and trying to sing....it's even worse. If these cats don't want to retire, at least lip sing at their concerts with a recorded version of their old voice.
The best show I ever saw were the Pretenders , the worst show was Van Halen. Eddy sitting on a chair for his solos , and David Lee Roth and his out of tune shouting.

Queen- OK I'll go out on a limb here. Queen was never able to play the entire Bohemian Rhapsody live as the operatic middle section could not be reproduced onstage.
This is crazy. Maybe they couldn't do that song like the studio version, but they were a great live band.
I was never really a fan of Queen recordings, but Freddy Mercury live is fcking AMAZING.
I agree it is crazy- and thus my stating to going out on a limb and referencing only the operatic section of Bohemian Rhapsody in answering the original question "Famous rock bands that don't have the ability to play their music live". And while there are many vids that accurately show the musicianship of the band and the showmanship of Freddie onstage the best example is the Live Aid show-stealing performance.
Pearl Jam and anything with David Grohl.
The problem with Grohl is that he has never learned a modicum of discipline on stage. He starts out strong and disintegrates into screaming/shouting/frantic instrument pounding and sweating profusely for entire second half of every set I've ever seen him do. I'm not sure if he's just an assshole narcissist, but his shows start strong and end in loud noise, every time.

A few great ones live:
1) Pretenders, tight and strong still to this day
2) The Police, years back, incredible and only the three of them, playing about 4 instruments/pedals each
3) Bruce Hornsby, great set a few years back
4) Toto, still good, some of the best professional musicians of their generation
5) Tom Petty, wish I would have seen him last year
Terrible live:
1) The Cars; ugh, Ocasek sucked ballls live, wished for my money back when I saw them
2) Eddy Money; hoarse and likely drunk on stage, just a real arsehole that night
3) Drive By Truckers; supposed to be good, but pitchy and weak when I saw them
4) Simple Minds, sloppy live
5) Journey, with that little weird dude trying to sound like Perry; just weird
6) Yes, several years ago; Howe looked 100 years old, the whole band sounded rubbery and tired; disappointing as hell
My goodness you're old.

Easy...The Beach Boys
Closely followed by the Monkees (other than Nesmith).
The Monkees were famous for not playing their instruments during recordings however there were a lot of groups who did not play on their records and the "band" was whatever collection of The Wrecking Crew had the gig and that does include The Beach Boys.

I disagree with the Boston addition to the list as Tom Scholz was able to but together a group of players to interpret his basement production project onstage.
I agree. I was surprised Scholz was able to do it although he obviously doesn't have Brad Delp to sing anymore.
Also disagree with those mentioning Steely Dan. I'm a big Dan fan and when they first went back out on tour in the '90's I questioned whether they'd be able to nail the sound and I was pleasantly surprised that they could for the most part. I've seen them a number of times since and they always play well....that is even if they don't play "Doctor Wu".

Elton John is a very sloppy pianist when playing live. Even on his live albums, you can hear him dropping notes on exposed piano parts.
Fat fingers.
Agree with the previous posters about Metallica-definitely one of the best out there live-at least when I saw them in the early to mid 90's-last time was the Load Tour-great tight set..haven't seen them with the "new" bassist, but Jason Newsted was great back in the day!

Didn't The Monkees at one time consider touring with The Mosquitoes?

And judging by some of the anti-Metallica hate posts, you'd think those posters were bass players who got passed over or something when Newsted left the band. Lol.
Here's the new bassist, Robert Trujillo, doing his frog walk at Glastonbury 2014 (starts @ 55 in).

Metallica always have excellent guys behind them. Hammett, trujillo, etc. are pros. Hetfield is a pro, but not a particularly good one, and Ullrich is legit terrible. To the extent that they recover live their studio sound it's because someone else is playing the drums ... or you can't hear them. It's not like fans going crazy give a damn if it sounds like the recorded version. You fanboys are incapable of separating two things - one can like the music without thinking the musicians are very good - that lots of people have a great time doesn't mean diddly.
Lots of slow people run 10Ks.

Was that before or after the Monkees toured with Jimi Hendrix?

Another nefarious anti-Metallica post from you...who would have thought. Lol. Oh geez...I forgot; you play in a band so that alone makes you a music expert (I'm a senior member of a masters running club, so I must be an expert on all things running related. Lol).
As I mentioned before, I could give a F if Lars is bad, mediocre, fair or whatever level of drummer he is. I've listened to Matallica and had attended several of their concerts decades ago as a young metal head and have continued following the band as a middle-aged metal head. I've been to two of their concerts in the last 18 months. Newsflash: Metallica wouldn’t be Metallica without Hetfield's distinct voice and style...imagine that. He's a professional musician and an entertainer - people flock to their concerts because they like Metallica's stuff and the band's charisma....no surprises there. Metal fans either like their music or not...nothing new there.
Btw, lots of people can't even run a 10k let alone a slow one. Lol.
