And Stargate was even better. Adding inviso and collecting four humanoids to enter the Stargate to warp ahead several stages.
Cool set up.
For your left hand you had the up-down joystick and a reverse button by your thumb.
For your right hand you had the thrust button for your index finger, the fire button for your middle finger, you could hit smart bomb or inviso with your thumb.
Then the hyperspace button was in the center and down a bit. You'd have to move your right hand away from the other buttons to smack it real quick if you were in immediate danger. Then you would appear anywhere, often in danger again, though.
The first time you saw all of those buttons it was intimidating.
You had to burn a few quarters to get a feel for it.

Star Wars Episode 1 Racer.
A very hooking racing game where you could go up to 500 mph racing in the podracers from the Star Wars Movie. There were 25 Tracks, around 25 racers too and you could custom your podrace as well.
If I gathered all the time I "wasted" playing that I wouldn't be surprised if it came down to 6 months straight nonstop.
I won't say it's the best game ever, but the game I had the most fun playing was James Bond Golden Eye. Getting a bunch of buddies in the same room for hours on end was the best. Totally different that talking to some rando via xbox live in Germany.
Tempest. Early 80s. By far.
Resident Evil 4. Wii edition especially. Great game, awesome environments, story line, sound etc.
Dead Space 1 and 2 were pretty good too.
Tough call between Final Fantasy VII and Golden Sun.
Borderlands 2 will always hold a special place in my heart
Red Red Redemption - Cant wait for the squeal - Talk about degree of difficulty, tons of street mafia type and fantasy type scenarios, but the wild west? and they pulled it off brilliantly.

Red *Dead* Redemption
Metal Gear Solid. The first one, when it came out on PS1, was groundbreaking. Such a great story and experience. The Metal Gear franchise is my favorite of all time.
SOCOM II.
After Saturday am practice we would gather 4 or 5 guys over to my teammate's basement and play SOCOM for hours. I attribute our time spent strategizing and working together to eliminate those terrorist b@stards as a major factor in our team running success.
Although eventually, one guy just got so good with the M16 that no one wanted to play anymore.
There is no spoon.

bro i loved this game so much too. it was fun to play in the career mode or whatever, and fun to race against friends
This is just about impossible to answer for someone that has played games continuously from about 1987 (NES) to present. So much has changed (as a person and technology wise).
If I answer as my current 43 year old self, I have very fond memories of GTAIV, Fallout 3 (New Vegas sucked), and Skyrim. I guess in my older age I like the idea of exploring and seeing what I can get into.
In my mid 20s to mid 30s I would have said Quake or Quake 2 due to how much online death match I played, or when playing solo, something like Baldurs Gate or Icewind Dale (both 1 and 2 on both games).
Earlier than that, we're talking Super Metroid, Mario 3 and Super Mario, Link to the Past
And in contrast to all that, the game I think about replaying the most, even now, is Mass Effect 2, which came out in Jan 2010. Several here have mentioned Resident Evil 4, and that gets my vote as best horror or survival type of game I've played, though I played it on Gamecube when it came out.
I played a couple hours of Mafia 3, I'm gonna check this out. Thanks!
