He really does not have anything more to prove so if he winds up breaking 1:20 for a half or 3:00 for a full is just icing on the cake for him. I bet 90% of people who post here would be thrilled if they had a PR of 1:52 let alone 1:42 for 800 m

Ugh.He means 1:41 half marathon, not 800mI hate to defend the person against whom I am arguing, but I have to here.1:24 and 1:41 reference half marathon times

This is maybe splitting hairs but FYI Symmonds best is 1:42 and I believe that Johnny Gray still has the AR and he himself never broke 1:42. A 1:41 is extremely fast and I believe only 5 people have ever broken 1:42:
David Rudisha 1:40.91
Wilson Kipketer 1:41.11
Sebastian Coe 1:41.73
Nigel Amos 1:41.73
Joaquim Cruz 1:41.77
Not to downplay Symmonds accomplishments but seconds and even tenths of seconds do matter at that level for this distance

Yes he was.
You don’t know anything about running.

Ability to maintaini speed
Allometrics.
It's all good- he's retired. He's documenting workouts as he prepares for Honolulu and recently posted a workout where he ran an all out mile in 4:50. I think he will be happy to break 3 hrs and may be capable of 2hr 50. I like what he's doing and his videos are entertaining to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wd2LZQ1Sckg
Where??According to the usatf site, he was an 800m runner after being a metric miler (middle distance). Was there some long distance work at this level prior to 2003, when he was on the radar for the 1500??

I'm almost 50 with a 2:01 lifetime 800 best.
I ran 1:24:2X as a 52YO. Symmonds didn't do anything special here. Let him get into a 1:10 race and see how he does!

He ran XC in HS and college where he ran sub 5:00 for 8k.
He was never into, as you say, "sprints."
This was not an impressive result in any way, except that it's impressive how much worse he's gotten. He clearly used to work pretty hard but not anymore.
I respect Symmonds for this. Everyone commenting about how this is so slow and he should be much faster based on his 800 time haven't been following him. He's training to run a marathon in Honululu. Not race a marathon to his potential, not try to become world class in the marathon, to run a marathon. His primary goals these days involve being the CEO of RunGum. Running is a hobby for him at this point.
How much faster did you want him to go?He won the race. He's not shooting to run a fast half, he's just having fun.
His 4:50 mile time trial was not too bad. I believe this was the same trail he was having trouble breaking 2:30 on for 800 reps before US Champs. Those new Brooks shoes are also pretty bulky.Put Nick on a track, with spikes, and a little competition, he would probably run around 4:20-25 right now.

Wonderful!
Accolades to you.
But we are talking Nick here.
I will ask you this ...and be honest:
Did you train for a long time to centralize on that distance?
Nick did fine and at the end of the day, it matters that nick won.
Otherwise, and think about this... If we are willing to take Symmonds to task on a win with a time you do not like, then every race that was tactical for someone to win would also be crap, rendering thousands of gold, silver, and bronze medals worthless because the wins were not done in a record time.
In which case, the winning time would govern the medals, not the placing.
Hah.
First is still first.
Way to go Nick

Invariably and as expected, people will put down Nick.
But LOOK, it is about time that the crap stops.
I have reached my breaking point and I have had it.
Those who are built to appear and run like hall, rupp, abdirahman, farah, keflezighi and such deserve all they get, but a 1:24 is NOT slow for someone who focused more on sprint distances.
You have this overly contrived sense of perfection that shifts based on who thou like.
As a 1:41 Runner at 13.11, I can say that I look up to symmonds for that time,
and, secretly, so do many of you.
Shut the heck up and stop ridiculing people. Conversely, challenge an elite, geryt beaten and THEN shut up.
Whatever it takes. Argue with me, I do not care EF off...
Nick did fine.
Jayyyy wrote:https://twitter.com/NickSymmonds/status/919245659298918400He's such a bum.
I heard he split the second half 10 minutes slower than the first... so, at least he ran even splits!
He also did a mile time trail a couple weeks ago and only got 4:51 so he doesn't really have his speed
So?He already has a legacy.Who else can have international medals, a beer mile record AND a half marathon win.One.Nick.

Especially not good half milers.
I'd be willing to bet that not a single man in any international level 800 stage Symmonds raced in had ever done a 20+ mile run.
Not sure what you mean by "800 stage", but Peter Snell routinely did 20 milers. That said, I would agree that MOST world class 800 runners don't run 20 milers.

I agree with this. I feel embarassed thinking of my crappy sub 15 5K and other crappy PRs compared with Symmonds' running achievements. The guy has won a world championship medal at 800m during the most competitive era of the event. He has also ran in the Olympic final of the greatest Olympic 800m final of all time. On top of all that he comes accross as a solid attractive dude who is not at all a running nerd like myself. The guy can do whatever he wants with his runniing as far as I am concerned; he simply has nothing to prove when you look at his stellar accomplishments.
