say you're Tuohy's coach. You know the stories of so many many girls who peak at age 15-16 and then fade away. What do you do with this one? Do you encourage her to go out and see what she can do at this time? Hard workouts, etc?
Or do you encourage patience and build up her strength and fitness, making her more durable for college and beyond?
I'm sure it depends on the kid. I can see both arguments. Always good to push an adolescent to see what she can do in anything. And even a plan of patience can fail.
But having a long term plan is also a life lesson.
Honestly not sure what I would do.
But regardless, always great to see a 15 year old having great success.
The interview shows Tuochy has maturity, intelligence and a calm acceptance that she has the gift of excellence. She expects to excel and understands that hard work is required if she is going to maximize her talent. I would not be surprised to learn she is also at the top of her class academically. At first I though there was a touch smugness to her interview but after a moment that faded. It was not conceit but realization and acceptance. Some combination of Carpe Diem and planning for the future, (is there a word that encompasses both mindsets?) is the impression I get from that short interview.
As always when a young girl emerges---and they do with regularity--- I drift back to the early 1970s and the start of Mary Teresa Decker Tabb Slaney story.
