Jorgensen is more accomplished professionally and was a runner in college. So does she qualify and get the nod?

I'm not a badger, but it seems to me that the question was about the best runner, not about the most accomplished alumnus or alumna who ran for your alma mater.

Um, Ever heard of Alistair Craig?
Yeah, I considered him; but I felt like world leaders/world champions/DL meet champs/multi time Olympians/Wanamaker champs outweighed a fast time and multiple dnf's. Weren't we discussing post collegiate careers? Could also argue for Lincoln into that second group with an AR/Olympic berth/Usatf champ.

Maxim Korolev. Dude knew how to hurt and still stay alive! Too bad he is now history.
What about Paul Gompers ('87)? World junior record holder in the marathon (2:15:28) when he was a college freshman, All-America in cross-country and track, second in 1987 national marathon championship (2:11:38), and fourth in 1988 Olympic trials marathon.
For M.I.T., Frank Richardson ('77). NCAA Div. III national champion at six miles. In 1980, he won the national marathon championship, finished ninth in Olympic trials marathon, and won the Chicago Marathon.
Henry Rono, Gerry Lindgren, Bernard Lagat
Go Cougs!
Henry Rono. GOAT.
Henry Rono. GOAT.
Alan Webb or Nick Willis probably. Depends on how you want to define best.
Andy Downin
Abdi Bile or Robert Lotwis
Dave Wottle.
Thom Hunt
Steve Scott
If not for a once in a lifetime race, my answer would have been Gary Tuttle, but given that race (as his great college career) I have to say Mark Conover.
Mary Wineberg
David Payne
(only track Olympic medalists in school history and both in 2008)
