America is a nightmare.
America is a nightmare.
I thought that dentistry was falling on hard times because people now have fewer cavities.
Good God! I got two Ivy grad degrees, one of them an M.D., for way less. That is absurd. Who do they think they are?

When did you graduate? Baby boomers and late gen-xers are generally clueless about the cost of higher education today and the impact on society.

That may be true, but 504k is pretty absurd. Lets assume for a moment that you are responding to somebody who went to Harvard for his HD. Current costs of that program is about 200k for 4 years. Columbia is about 240k for 4 years. That is still half of 500k.

America has been made great and should never be criticized. If you think America is not perfect you should leave.
OK, but you picked a professional degree program from a private university. Does that include living expenses as well? Because it is also in with the most expensive places in the country to live.
I think that the increase in the cost of higher education has been a bit overstated in recent years. Look at tuition for schools like the University of Florida, any of the State University of New York schools, University of Illinois, Indiana, and other quality state institutions. I think you'll find that the tuition for many of the flagship universities in many states is under $10k per year. Florida (where I live) is about $6500-$7000 depending on the school.
Off campus housing has gotten ridiculous though, for sure.
Here in the UK we just laugh at you Yanks and your fascination with straight white teeth. Over here, we all know that dental work isn't really necessary because the NHS doesn't cover most of it.

Very true. Also, the tuition will keep going up as long as saps continue to apply, enroll, and take out "cheap" loans to pay for the education.
Cut out the sugar (pure, white, deadly) and fast carbs and you reduce inflammation. Reduced inflammation reduces gum disease.
No charge.

My family and friends are here, so I think I'll stay. Otherwise, I'd be gone.
$173k for a 2 year dental hygienist program? WTF.

Neil Armstrong the First Man on the Moon graduated from USC MS Aeronautical Engineering
Allyson Felix 17 time World Outdoor & Olympic Champion graduated from USC BA/MA Education
Toshihiko Seko 9 time major marathon winner, attended USC and ran the Marathon in the 1984 Olympic Games
On the bright side, you get free laughing gas and an endless prescription pad, so you're a big hit at parties. You can slip those USC ungrad hottie's a Cosby cocktail and they'll still marry ya for that income you'll get as a cosmetic dentist in LA.
The real issue is the fact that these schools are building palaces with the latest technology regardless of costs because they know people are willing to pay whatever it takes to get a medical or dental degree (this program only admits 5% or so of people that apply). That, and the fact that everything in Southern California is insanely expensive. As far as people not getting cavities, that is laughable. Our cultural addiction to sugar maintains a steady supply of patients for all dentists.

Actually, the occupational outlook for dentists is improving because "demand for dental services will increase as the population ages, cosmetic dental services become increasingly popular, and access to health insurance continues to grow."
