Yeah, it is too early to worry about all this if you really haven't even been racing much. There could be a nice drop right around the corner. This is an opportunity to apply some of the life lessons that running can teach us: (i) control the things that you can control and let the things that you cannot control shake out as they may (you are doing a good job of the first part of that), and (ii) running, like life, is not linear; things happen in fits and starts. So give it some time.
A couple of other points:
- This sounds worse than I intend it, but your self-evaluation may not be reasonable. You "know" that you could be an All American, but as a 20 or 21 year old (and, functionally, a college junior), you are a 27:00 8k runner. How do you reconcile those things?
- Running is one small part of college. Don't make it the sole part. That is not just because you are missing out on other things, but it may also negatively impact your running to NOT do other things. My greatest running came when I was doing it all: running, performing well academically, chasing women and drinking with buddies. It was almost as if I became more focused within each of those disciplines because I had to as a result of balancing all of those things.
