Seems like half the people I know who go vacation abroad or to "resorts" or whatever just go somewhere and lay around and/or drink in a bar and don't actually experience wherever it is they're visiting. For example, my coworker went to the French Canary Islands for his honeymoon, and he told a story about how they were supposed to go on this awesome hike that is the thing to do there, but he missed it because he was having a good time drinking at the bar. Why even fly anywhere if you're just going to drink at a bar? You can drink at a bar at home or in the next town over, or in California if you want some place sunny. Why? I don't get it.
Why do people travel just to spend their time laying on the beach or drinking in a bar?

If you don't get it, don't do it.
Separation feels good. Obviously. Easier to forgot about all the stressors back home. -
Sipping on coconut, hanging out at the beach and swimming is NOT COOL. Very lame and very stupid, thanks for pointing that out.

Where exactly are the "French" Canary Islands?

You mean lying on a beach. Not laying on a beach. Think of sitting and setting. Same rules.
I am sitting on a beach. I am lying on a beach.
I am setting my towel on a beach. I am laying my towel on a beach.
Not: Why do people spend their time setting on a beach? Not: Why do people spend their time laying on a beach?
The complication is that lay also is the past tense of lie. E.g.: Today, I lie on the beach. Yesterday, I lay on the beach. -
It's pretty simple, some people really love drinking and are totally fine with it potentially disrupting their plans they might have had before they started drinking that day. I'm not one of those types and it sounds like you aren't either. People can choose what and how they spend their money though so more power to them even though it does sound like they are wasting their time.

Wrong! OP is talking about chickens. -
This could pretty much apply to almost any vacation. Some people just like to sit around a drink. In the spring I went camping with a couple of families at an amazing state park with great trails, fishing, mountain biking and boating. My kids and I went everywhere and did everything. But there was a group of dads who just sat around the campfire all day and drank and talked and talked and drank. They did not get wasted. But they were happy as clams just sitting around drinking and talking even though they missed out on everything.

They were happy and relaxed. If that met their goals then good for them. -
That is vacation to them. Some people don't want do anything. Not my cup of tea, me and my wife love to be active. I know a former couple who used to go to the beach and just sleep in their hotel room all day. They never went out until night time to have dinner.

Self-image. Some people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars to travel to another place just so they can tell other people they went there. Even if they only did things that they could have done at home.

Because those people are basic, and basic people do boring-ass things like lay on the beach for hours on end, or get smashed at a bar and spend their vacation hungover in bed. But you can rest assured that they will document every second of it to put on their facebook or instagram. They NEED people to know that they had money to spend to travel somewhere.

Lie on the beach. Not lay on the beach.
Do you set on the beach? Or do you sit on the beach? Same issue. -

Posting on running forums is cool but water in tropical destinations, NOT. Thanks for clarifying. -
Change of scenery. Disposable income.

It's so that they have free rein to look at partially clothed members of the opposite sex, you moran.
Your example of going to "California " is just an example of the exact same thing.
For some people California is no different from any exotic beach in the tropics. -

Yeah, I've noticed that. This girl from work spent 6 weeks in Europe and talked and talked about it beforehand, then posted a whole bunch of photos on her instagram about it, and then talked about how much of a blast it was when she got back. The funny thing is, every single photo she posted was either of her on the beach, eating food, or drinking alcohol. I'm not sure she actually did anything. Food and drink is a part of traveling, but there's a lot more to traveling than that. -

It's not considered acceptable to post pics of yourself being nailed by the locals. -
