I believe Terry Bradshaw was once the hs record holder in the javelin. And wasn't James Lofton an accomplished long jumper in the 27' range. An urban legend has it that David Thompson (NC State '74) walked by a track practice one spring to visit a friend, a long jumper, on the team. They talked him into long jumping. Wearing basketball shoes and with a 3/4 speed run up, he jumped near 27' on his first attempt. It sounds like a fable, but those knowing Thompson had a 45" vertical leap, who knows?
