I agree. You need the genetics/"talent" plus the training and lifestyle changes to be a "great" masters runner. But it is not that easy. Not everyone will get there no matter how hard they try because everyone is different and has different genetics.
Also, you can really mess up your body with 30 years of eating too much, smoking/drinking/other drugs, and living an unhealthy lifestyle. It takes a lot of effort and commitment to dig yourself out of a hole. Some people do everything right for 5 or more years starting at age 30 and they never break 3:30 or 4:00 as a male.
Not everyone was born to run. Everyone is different. Being decent comes relatively easy for some, while others will never get there no matter how hard they try.
