Even if Mo was in WR shape, which he's not, I would say he wouldn't get it for another reason, Pace making. Komen got paced through 2k in 4:53, 4:53 is the 30th fastest 2000m ever. Most pro athletes can't run that, let alone the pacers.
Komen had the best pacing ever that day.
I firmy believe that El Guerrouj could have gotten the WR in 1999. The pwcemaker was asked to go through in 2k in 4:53, just like Komen. While he accomplished this, he went out way to slow the first kilometer and ran way to fast the second kilometer to get back on track. Guerrioj went with this and it took alot out of him. However, Guerrioj managed to hold on to WR pace till that last lap, when he tied up. However, he still ran 7:23. Guerrouj could have gotten it, but his attempt got screwed, and after that disaster he never went for it again.
I'm not trying to write off Komens record, it is certainly one of the most impresive on the books, despite not being a championship distance. I'm just saying despite how good Komen was, a Prime El G could have gotten it.
