You ran 2:01 800, but barely cracked 60 for 400? Not buying it....
35 yo hobbyjogger. Fastest times in the past year (all in races):
400m: 59.9
800m: 2:21
Mile: 5:20
5k: 19:12
10k: 39:26

Best I could do at 38 (almost 2 years ago):
400m: 67
800m: n/a
Mile: 5:27
5k: 19:03
10k: 40:32
Running that 67 almost killed me! I could break 60 in high school, but barely.

I think speed is the foundation for all running events, as you mentioned knocking out slower reps are 'easier' but you guys do that time and time again lol I get to about 3 laps and I'm dead lol
That's impressive, nice one. I was curious to look this up - there were some seriously good times in those events. And the world masters WRs too. I'm at the age 75 or 80 level :) At least it's theoretically possible to still run those times at that age!

And how long could you maintain that pace on average for?
I'm time trialing 400m later today and am looking sneak under it, my 200m ability is 27.3-27.8 right now.
My first ever 400m at age 14 was 58.9.
Now I go through the first 400m in about that

I'd guess you can do it off those 200 times if you pace it well - post back here.
I'm late 40s and ran 69 recently out of curiosity. Maybe I could get down to 65, but I doubt under 60 unless I focused like mad on it.
As noted above, Guido has run under 60 seconds for 400m at age 70. What about running the 400m under your age?
Based on World Men's 400m five year age group records, Charlie Allie ran a 52.24 in the M55 age group. From then on up, all men's age group 400m records are under their age until M90 where a Japan guy has 1:33.99. So apparently for over three decades men can (well, some can) run a 400m under your age between 55-90.
Curious, that based on World Women's 400m records, no women has ever run a 400m time under her age.
The last time I was able to break 60 seconds for the 400m HURDLES was at age 45
I had to delay it till tomorrow :(, hopefully I can hit 200 in around 29 and come back faster than 31, or is an opening 29 second 200 in a 400 with 27.6 200m ability suicidal?
I've done 58-59 a few times so I'm part of a fast club for once
49 at 49 is coming next season. That would be the youngest. I believe there has been a 50 at 50 time out there as well this year. Currently M52 has run 50.73

Should be easy for you. I have a 26s 200, 56s 400.
A good rule of thumb is 200x2 + 4
(First 200 is 1s off 200 PR, second 200 is 1st + 3)
(PR+1, PR+4)
(Note: 400 specialists like WvN can run more like PR+3 or quicker on the second 200, but both short sprinters and distance runners are hard-pressed to hold speed like that.)
ie
20.0x2 +5 = 45.0
19.5x2 + 5 = 44.0
24x2 + 5 = 53
And hey, 27x2 + 5 = 59!

nice c*ck too?
also that's a very slow 5K for speed, what gives?
Once ran 1.25.9 for 660 yards.
Continued to finish the 880 in 1:58.0, basically running backwards that last 220. But, at least ran under 60 for two laps...
I'm more of an 800 runner. 200 = 26.4 x 2 + 4.2 57.0 Ran both in one season. 28/29 Feels much easier to run the 400 with just a 1 second positive split. Barely felt anything the first 90% of the race.

That's why this thread is such a joke. I can do sub 60 but not by enough to be proud of it.
I ran a 59 on a wet dirt track once and on an indoor track once, at peak I was probably in shape to hit a 58, MAYBE a high 57, but never ran one all out during that time

Give yourself a long term goal!
I suspect you are in America? the World Masters Champs are in Toronto in 2020 that gives you two years to work yourself into the 400m for your age group
Never too old to master the sport!
Bloody hell sub 50 at mid 30!
I am 29 and couldn't do that! I am at 59 and that is flat out!
I did 59.0 at 13 on a grass track. 37 years ago. Now I would need a bike or roller skates though.
