Serious question. I've been wondering how fast a top steeplechaser like Jager could go for the 400h. I use Jager as an example since he has better form than the Kenyans who seem to disregard form completely. Could he run as fast as lower tier college d1 or d2 guys?
How fast could Evan Jager run for the 400 hurdles?

Probably 53.??
-
Right now - about 54 seconds. If he concentrated on it he could get down to 52 maybe 51 seconds.
-
For sure under 8 minutes
-
I'd say closer to 52. I had a friend run an 8:56 steeple and he ran I think 56 in an actual meet.

Jäger can't summon a leg speed turnover above 170 strides per minute. He'd go about 55, his maximum loping speed in a 1500.

Well, the world record in the 400 hurdles was set with right around that turnover...
It's probably safe to assume he would run about 4 seconds slower than his 400m pr pace, since he hasn't worked the hurdles and rhythm the way an actual 400m hurdler would have done. I think it's reasonable to estimate about a 52 for his 400m hurdles. That is a solid 4 seconds behind elite 400m hurdlers. -
The female 400 hurdle specialists run 53 or 54 range. I'd have to say Jager would be at least 1-2 seconds faster so I'll go with 51-52.
The simple methods hold up. -

I´m sure you know that females have lower hurdles. -
I agree with the majority, not likely he runs slower than 54 if trained properly, likely he'd be closer to 51/52.
That begs the question: How fast is Jager over the flat 400?
If the answer is 50 point or 49 I don't understand why he was scared of Kipruto in the final. -
Because Kipruto has (or so his coach says) 48 flat.

The problem US male steeplers encounter is their focus on hurdling form.
Watch the last lap of the WC steeple.
It just doesn't matter. -

Hurdling form got US women 1-2 though, so -
Well to begin, in order to run 51-52 you normally run around a 46-47 400m ( Jager wont dont that), you have to be way more efficient at the hurdles (most men that run those times usually run the 110h around 14.5), he can probably run around 48.9 fastest 400, so ill give jager a 54.5 the fastest because the form for steeple is completly different to the 400h, mainly because the trail leg snap is way slower in the steeple compared to the 400h and it takes awhile to get used to the step pattern of the 400h, plus all the distance guys posting their bs input on sprint events and seeing how a distance runner will do is and always will be stupid.

He's not a 400 runner, and top speed at that distance is not important for him.

An 8:40 Aussie steeple chaser ran a 53.29 400m hurdles. He also ran a 4 flat mile and a 1:50 800m. Sadly, he has since passed. Glenn Stojanovic. http://nswathletics.org.au/News/vale-glenn-stojanovic-1974-2013
Surely, Jager, would run faster. -
I think he'd have a hard time getting his steps down, particularly if he's not switching lead legs. Anyone who's hurdled can tell you that it's not an automatic transfer of flat speed to hurdle speed in the longer hurdle events. Rhythm and stride length play a big role. I'd bet he could run 54 or so without total dedication to form and all the drills.

Agreed. Seems like his cadence is very slow compared to other elite steeplechasers, and that was shown in the final where it looked like he had zero speed at the end. Definitely isn't a speedy guy.
