Good news for runners? Flagstaff has approved a $15 minimum wage

Runners are more likely in the $250K+ bracket, and will now have to pay for their gourmet pizza delivery.

As a business owner, you understand that increases to business costs will lead to lower profits (not desirable) or somehow demand higher revenues (likely through increased prices). This will be bad for runners because they don't have jobs and limited funds. Their scarce dollars now won't go as far.

Yes I know that. But if you have a minimum wage job, and can keep it and don't have your hours reduced,more than your increase and pay and the increase in prices you come out ahead. That's why people advocate for a higher minimum wage.

I was thinking more of the runners who are working part time in Flagstaff if this was good for them.

I get how if you're a fully sponsored athlete without a side job and the cost of services go up that's not a good thing for your pocketbook.

I haven't studied the Flagstaff economy much but it seems like one of the places that would be hardest hit by an increase to $15. NYC raising the minimum to $15 isn't as big a deal. But Flagstaff and NYC are going to have the same minimum wage. The question is what is the sweet spot for the minimum wage? Everyone agrees we couldn't pay everyone $40 tomorrow. But NYC and Flag having the same minimum shall be interesting . I bet economist will love examining the increase in Flag, because it's a remote fairly isolated town.

Flagstaff seems to be one of the places where raising the minimum wage to $15 could have really negative effects if they're going to occur anywhere. But if a ton of the consumers are tourists and the costs can be passed on maybe it won't be the same as if PoDunk USA raised it to $15.

But even in that environment, some college grad looking for a few spare hours to work (a runner moving to Flagstaff without a full time sponsorship) would seem to be a person who might get the $15 job as they could be pretty productive. Whereas before they might be working for $10.

If they were smart enough to do that, they wouldn't be making minimum wage.

Here is a possible scenario. Due to the seasonal tourism aspects of the area, it morphs from $10 jobs to a few $15 jobs plus some "unpaid" mostly-foreign interns sponsored by NGOs (Soros?) for environmental/cultural development.

The correct minimum wage is $0/hour. Labor markets will determine the prevailing wage that workers actually earn.

Here's the deal with a $15/hour minimum wage...

Employers cut hours

Eliminate OT

Hire fewer workers

... so fewer workers end up actually getting paid less.

but it plays well for the media.

And remind me why unskilled labor at the entry level deserves $30K/year??

Flagstaff is already seeing some negative effects from the wage hike. Restaurants and businesses have already raised prices, cut down their staff, or shut their doors completely.

Cost of living in Flagstaff is already fairly high in comparison to average income, and all signs point to this trend continuing, and cost of living getting even higher.

Bad news for everyone. Have you seen the early effects of the Seattle increase to $15? And they are only at $13 now. The average worker has actually lost $125 per month, or about $1,500 per year.

So you're saying as a professional runner in Flagstaff I can make $4.37 running a 5k?

Hmmmm centralized command and control economies have worked so well in the real world. Seems like there was an experiment done with that on a VERY large scale not too long ago...you know USSR, east germany, etc. They had to shoot their citizens to keep them from leaving that wonderful system. There are a million interrelated reasons why it doesn't work.

The key word in all of this is "if". Yeah, IF I can keep my job and if they don't cut hours and if they don't raise prices for everything else i buy and if the small business owners don't just file bk because they can't make a profit and if and if and if...... and if my aunt had balls she woudl be my uncle
