Quick update. You don't have to be super fast to be a fast old guy, it turns out. I think the heat may have been a factor, plus the wind, so the time was not what I was hoping for but the result was good. The mile course was an out-and-back with a small (200m) lollipop loop around a gas station on the end so you don't run back past the runners that are close behind you. I got right out on pace, thinking I was going to hit 75s the whole way and see what I had left. With the recent track work I was spot on with my pace (evident since I hit the first quarter mile in about 75). But from the gun, I was by myself. I was probably 5 seconds or more clear from the pack at the quarter mile. At that point, my mouth got dry and sticky, and my chest started to burn. The race was mine to lose so I settled in and just ran. My watch hit the quarter mile split well before the 1/4 mile marker, and then right before 1/2 mile there was a 90 degree turn and I got to turn and look back and see the trailing pack of 3-4 guys about 50 feet back. 1/2 mile split early, and 3/4 split early, and 1 mile split about 60 yards from the line. I felt good down the stretch (though my arms were tingling and my throat was burning) and was able to pick it up. According to the GPS I split a 5:10 mile and had an overall time of about 5:20. The "quarter race" splits were 78, 85, 86, 73. I ran alone with a decent cross-wind, 92 degrees F (but mostly shaded). I got the "W" by maybe 10 seconds. Tomorrow's 5K is going to be at 7pm (an hour later) so it should be a bit cooler but I'm going to not worry too much about the magical 17:00 mark.
