I wasn't all that impressed with the whole event. They may as well have run downhill at St George or point-to-point with a howling tailwind. Kipchoge is a great runner, but we already knew that. All we found out today is that Kipchoge can run 2.5 min faster than the WR under illegal conditions. That's it. Berlin beckons.
How cool is That? Kipchoge went after it and was THIS close!!!!

I think we all knew that one day, someone would break 2 hours. This proved that the day that will happen is alot closer than we thought. Eliud may have just completetly changed marathoning.

Foot in mouth.
We know that Eliud was already a baller but holy F.... that was awesome. I hope the shoes didn't help much. The skeptic in me is still alive if these are truly "cheater shoes".
On the flip, I don't want to give Swoosh biz that much cred and fall for the marketing. I want a 3rd party to do a shoe analysis.
Two thoughts. Nike has caused the world today to discuss our under-appreciated sport and you under-appreciate them? Shame on you. :)
(I am wearing Adidas of late).
And the shoes. Sure, maybe the spring blades Oscar and others used helped a bunch, but nearly nothing tucked in so tiny a shoe space could help enough to matter. Heck, Kipchoge ran perhaps the greatest race ever with insoles half out (ever run a marathon with a tiny ripple in one sock and you can see how he defied bad luck that day!). -
As long as we are changing the rules, why not introduce a few time outs to the marathon. That way we can accommodate commercial breaks, athletes can use the restrooms, rehydrate, get coaching instruction, etc. Maybe we can also legalize substitutions and send in other guys to run the middle portion of the race

Nike marketing department be pure scum.
It just so happens that the number of seconds needed to break 2 hours in the marathon are 26 now. The same amount of miles in the marathon. coincidence? -
Dude, go back to your entry level slippery slope philosophy class.

First off I bet you can't run 1 mile in 4:35.
You have no idea how fast these guys are running.
-St. George is a silly Mormon marathon to get a pr and qualify for Boston. That course is silly. You can't compare the 2.
These guys ran a flat course! Not downhill and no tail wind. Yes there was some drafting but he ran a flat 26.2 in. 2:00:24
He ran 4:35 miles for freaking 20+ miles I don't care about some silly rules that are meant to protect corporate marathons. This is a legit time and the first attempt of many I am sure. We are splitting hairs:).
*take this effort for what it was (impressive) it made people dream big and open their eyes to the future.
No doubt it isn't a (legal) course but who cares does that really mattter? Should he have to run this effort on city streets with 40,000 people who can't break 1 mile in 5 Minutes let alone 26.2 at 4:35.
Do not judge what you will never be able to do. -
It is actually pretty similar to Paula's record. She had pacers the whole way, and some people put asterisks next to it because of that. She didn't have fancy shoes though, but I think the drafting did the majority of the work.

Well, this is all cool and stuff, but the real question remains unanswered:
Can Eliud Kipchoge do a single pullup? -
I just had my weekly phone call to my 88 year old mother and she knew about the run and the result. I've run for over 50 years and my mother had next to no interest in it, yet she was not the only one in her seniors home who had seen a bit of it. This is pretty cool.

I reckon 2 hours ticked over when he was about 140 meters short of the finish line, so close! Couldn't be more impressed with Kipchoge (unless he broke 2), from his performance to his training and attitude throughout.
I wish they had some better racers with him, Tadese was an embarrassment, didn't even get half way in an hour despite having half MR of 58:23. Mind you he's 35 now and his WR was 7 yrs ago. -
2008 Eliud v Kenny: Nike v Adidas second sub 2 attempt. You know we all want it.
-
Does anyone know what the course was like? Mostly downhill? Why wouldn't Nike pick an easy, although 26.3 certified, course for this?

Hi. Nice to see you. You're late. -

Props to Kipchoge for running such an amazing effort.
Now let's talk sub-2 marathons. If we can't break the barrier with perfect pacing, ideal conditions, ideal nutrition strategies, Nike money and support, and custom shoes that work controversially well, then it doesn't look like people will be cracking 2:00 in races any time in the near future.
If "we"?
There was no we. That was a single person going for it.
Imagine if every top runner was there.
That would have increased the odds. -
Chuck Norris could a done it in 1 hour under those conditions.

You're either a moron or you didn't watch the race... which one is it? -
I think many are forgetting that this was never meant to be a WR attempt it was simply a thought experiment made real. Many before have speculated just how far away a 2:00 run was away - 1 year 5? 50? Because we really did not have a good grasp of how physically possible it was. Well I think after this result most are re-thinking their guess. And that is the whole point. Those that dismissing it as a mere gimmick don't realize the effect this could have on those who might be able to accomplish this both right now and in the future.

Yes, it was cool that he came close but remember the spirit
of the marathon is this to deliver a message of an invasion.
Pheidippides would be disappointment that Eluid ran back
to place of origin and possibly would've been victim of
the Persians' attack.
The race should've been run from Marathon to Athens,
to give it more credence. -
Kenny couldn't even win his last marathon.
So he's not a viable competitive challenge to Eliud.
