Breaking: Bekele says that the state of the art sub-2 Nike shoes gave him blisters and cost him - adidas guy wins!!

Awesome. I knew those 4% swooshers were all hype.

Pretty sure he didn't wear the sub2 shoes. Also, why would he wear new shoes for a race? Why didn't he train with them beforehand?

When he says new , he might mean a 'new style' not ones that he's never worn before.

But if they were brand new, who knows. I think he'd assume his employer would be smart enough to do the one thing they are responsible for - giving him proper race equipment - properly.

Maybe it behaves differently in a race than in practice. Why would Kipchoge's inserts pop out and cost him possibly the world record in Berlin?

Are you crazy? Did you watch the race? Can you imagine running a marathon with a blister?

Bekele was amazing today. It's not normal that you get dropped early in a marathon and nearly win it unless the leader blows up. Yet that's what Bekele did today. He just kept coming back - refusing to give up.

There is a whole other thread where people talk about how his form is different - maybe the shoes are partly responsible.

The shoes only work if you go sub 2. Bekele was never close.

I have a feeling that Nike will not be so happy with Bekele for talking trash about the shoes that they are going to attempt to break two with.

Someone summon the Nikeman! He seemed very sure Bekele didn't have the vaporfly elite last time he raced.

- That said, a blister is Bekele's responsibility .... parts of your training should be done with the shoes you intend on wearing in the race in order to ensure you don't get blisters, understand the lacing system, etc.

Rojo, you're wrong here. Making excuses about your shoes? That's junior high stuff. It's your job to make sure you're running in a shoe that doesn't give you blisters. Sure, Bekele refused to give up and made a courageous surge late in the race. That doesn't mean he's not lame for blaming the race on his shoes.

5 of the top 6 finishers at Boston for both the men and women were wearing the shoes... in the heat. Bekele is the problem, not the shoes. Dude isn't cut out for the marathon.

Anyone know if Wanjiru was wearing the new adizero sub 2 boosts from adidas or was he wearing the adios boosts? (My eyes are too slow these days).

He didn't blame anything. I'm presuming a reporter asked him a question as to why he fell back and he answered it truthfully. It amazes me people think that's weak or blaming someone. What do you want him to do - lie?

So how do you propose he answer the following question. "Hey Kenny what happened there. You fell way back before 30k. Why was that?"

"Um, well you know I've won so much. I just don't really want it anymore.I just dropped off in the middle of the race because I didn't want it."

I mean he's not throwing Nike under the bus. He's answering reporters questions. It amazes me that people think he's making excuses.

It very well may have been partially his fault for not breaking in shoes as we don't know what happened but I'd still blame the shoe company or the sub-2p project. We are being told that these geniuses with the various sub-2 projects (isn't bekele working with the other one) are so smart and the technology/nutrition so good that that they are the reason why people are running fast, when clearly that's no the case.

They are so smart and yet they let a guy where a shoe that gives him a blister in the biggest race of the year? Epic PR fail.

Nike sucks, but I am thankful they support our sport.

Has anyone pointed out that an adidas athlete - Keitany - also won the women's race.

It's been a tough last few weeks for Nike. Their star female - Sumgong - tests positive and now they have a major technology snafu at yet another major as adidas athletes win.

C'mon man.

I'll call KB out.

Shoes cost me the race is something you hear from 'that guy'.

And please don't ever be 'that guy'.
