I went to Cuba over spring break and I realized that I like being in Latin America better than the US. I live in a big northeast city, and I have realized it is starting to make me depressed. Everyone is extremely career focused, generally unfriendly, and not open to meeting new people.
In Cuba, Costa Rica, and Chile (the three latin american countries I have visited) there are much fewer people with iPhones, so when you don't have anything to do, you just kind of stand around and take in your surroundings, rather than whip out your phone. I have found that this makes interacting with people way easier.
These countries, all of which are underdeveloped to different degrees, must be in need of people with hard, technical skills, like myself. I can code, I can analyze data, I have always been good at economics, and I am very good at looking at large complicated problems and distilling them down to their essential components. I feel that if I were able to meet the right people and put myself in the right place, I could gain a lot of very useful experience, while simultaneously helping a lot of people.
I graduate in 2018, and I need to get the hell out of the United States, as I have been here since I was born and haven't spent much time abroad. Does anyone have any advice on how I might go about doing this?
