If the last lap of your 5K is a second or two faster than average, that's just a matter of being tough and finishing strong. If you go from jogging at 20+ minute pace to running a 15 second last 100m, yes, you saved something.
Sounds like some people don't know how muscle fibers work. To kick from 400 (your Centro comment) is ridiculous. But to kick from 100 should always be possible, even if you went at max *aerobic* pace for 4900. Kick does not always mean sit and kick.
