There is a lot of twaddle in this thread.
The most obvious one is that because Farah has a faster 1500 pb than Ovett then his 100ability must be better. Rubbish.
Ovett was competing 30+ years before and his ultimate 1500 potential is at least the equal of Farah. A 3:30 in 83 would be at least a 3:29 on the super fast mondo track of Monaco with the sort of pace and competition Farah faced.
Ovett started off as a sprinter and moved up to 800 in mid teens. He has run 21.7 for 200 from blocks as a teen. He would have experience of blocks. Anyone running that fast for 200 must have been capable of 11.2 at the least for 100 from blocks.
As he moved up to 800/1500 he never ran competitive 200's in his best years, but a 46.8 400 relay in 79 indicates sub 22 200ability and probably 11.5 for 100 from blocks.
Coe ran a 45.5 relay in 79 and a 45.6 from a stumble in 81 90 mins after front running 1:44.0. He also ran a series of 200's in training as a benchmark to when he was in his best shape, and the fastest last rep he achieved was 21.6. If that was at end of a series and with sub 46 open 400 ability, he must have been capable of below 21.5 fresh from blocks. With just some rudimentary training on starts, anyone with sub 21.5 ability can run a 100 from blocks in at least 11.0.
Now there will be a few elite 800 runners capable of that too, but I can't think of any elite (3:30/3:48 as stipulated at start of thread) milers who could run as fast as Coe over 100m. He is the only sub 3:30 guy to have run sub 1:42 for 800 and the only 3:30 athlete who has gone sub 1:43 and 47 for 400m. In fact I don't think any sub 3:32 1500 runner has broken 47 in an open 400m.
Therefore, if no 3:30 1500 guy could match his 400speed, then no one is going to have better 100 speed.
