Or maybe the improvement was just going from marathon 1 to 2. Or the course, or the day.
I am shocked to see that many runners logging 60+ miles to run a 3h Marathon, or say a 2h50. I am not even close to be talented and however I could run a 2h41 under ~ 50 miles. I am sure it is possible to run well under 3h00 for an average talent under 50 miles a week, as long as it is done constantly for a few years (depending on the runner background it can be done in a year) and focused in quality.
I would be interested in knowing why running that much (some posters over 80 or 90 miles) and how such a schedule would look like. I don't run more than 50 miles a week because my body wouldn't sustain that volume with work/family/social life. It seems 50 is my optimal mileage, one that I can run well and keep the balance of other aspects of my life.

15mpw marathon was the most painful race I have run and second race of my life(the first was a 54 minute 10k), couch to marathon in 3 months. Second marathon was 5 months later and was better, blew up at 22 and lost a minute per mile to the finish. Third was 6 months later and my first slight positive split. Gave up a pack a day habit after the race and raised my mileage over a year to run the race of my life so far. Currently trying to reach the WC standard of under 2:19 this spring two years after my last marathon (2:13-2:14 to go, will not happen)
