I'm curious the kind of jumps people had by boosting mileage.

30 mpw & some bicycling (50 mpw): 3:09 - 3:10
45 mpw: 2:56 - 2:59
60 mpw: don't know yet
If we are talking average MPW for say about 10 weeks leading up to taper....
50 - 2.59
60 - 2.54
75 - 2.49
85-90 with peak weekly mileage of 100 - 2.41
100 - got hurt before race day
~ 20 - 3:35 (1992, age 27)
~ 25-30 - 3:15 (1992)
~ 40 - 3:01 (1998?)
~ 45 - 2:52 (2002?)
~ 65 - 2:44 (2004?)
~ 70-75 - 2:42 (2006)
~ 55-60 - 2:44 (2009)
~ 40 - dropped out of final attempt, on pace for > 3:00 at 30 miles (2011, age 46)
I always hated marathons, don't know why I ever did any. The only one I ever finished feeling good was the second one, every one after (and before) that I ended up feeling like dog $h!t and swore never again... By now I really mean it :-)
bump, lets see more times.
2:59 - 55 mpw (age 30)
3:11 - 70 mpw (age 34) - did a 1:15 HM during the build, bombed on race day
2:53 - 50 mpw (age 41)
It's quality, not quantity. Most recent marathon was on Hanson's Plan, hailed it.
60 - 2:57
70 - 2:49
80 - 2:45
100 - 2:40
Recently 30-40 - 3:13 Never said I was smart
20 - 4:47
30 - 4:34
40 - I took up ultra and didn't run anything as easy as a marathon for ~7 years)
45 - 3:55 (~10 years after my first marathon)
85 - 2:35
95 - TBD
Race 1 - 68.375 mpw in 8 weeks leading to taper with a peak at 80: 2:35:20 on a tough course in bad weather.
Race 2 - 72.75 mpw in 8 weeks leading to taper with a peak at 100: 2:30:50 on a fast course in pretty good, if slightly warm weather.
To flesh it out some, my workout for Race 1 went much better than those for Race 2.
Really hard to make an apples to apples comparison on different courses in different weather conditions, especially with a limited data set of 2 races.
40 MPW - 2:43 (age 27)
55 MPW - 2:32 (age 36 & def my best performance relative to fitness)
65 MPW - 2:30 (age 33)
I would view overall mileage as a means to an end. In other words it prepares you to handle and recover from long runs and long marathon pace workouts.
20 / 3h30 (2008)
40-45 / 2h59 (2010)
40-45 / 2h54 (2011)
45-50 / 2h41 (2014)
45-50 / ? (2017)
My mileage per week hasnt changed much since 2010, however after doing it for about 5-6 yrs and learning how to train better i became a better runner.
40 MPW- 3:28 (2007 - age 37)
50 MWP - 3:08 (2008 - age 38)
70 MWP - 2:50 (2010 - age 40)
90 MWP - 2:46 (2-11 - age 41)
70 MWP - 2:50 ( 2016 - age 46)
I am not very talented when it comes to long distances, but there it is:
30M - 3:23 first marathon, 1:29 half, crashed at 20 miles.
40M - 2:53
60M - 2:57
70M - X:XX got injured - out of running for 1 year.
40M - 2:50
60M -X:XX got injured again and gave up with the marathon.
70-3:10 (serious crash and burn)
80-3:02 (really hot day)
90-2:47 (decent race)
100+-DNF (overtrained)
90-2:42
...
Eventual PR of 2:35 keeping mileage around 90.
Every post I put up is deleted. Why?
30mpw- 3:26 (1:28 1st half lol)
55mpw- 2:53
90mpw- 2:37 basically solo and during a storm. Should have been good for ~2:32
Get out meh thread Dank.
P.S - I'm racing a marathon in June - No more 20-30mpw junk stuff like I did before, going to peak at 65- I'll post on this thread to see the difference from my 20-30mpw peak to 65-75.
45-50 4:38 (2006 - This is an outlier because I was severely anemic at the time)
50-60 3:31 (2007)
60-70 3:10 (2008 - This was the first one where, even though I experiencing some tanking at the end, I didn't totally fall apart)
75-80 2:56 (2009 - Nailed it, felt awesome, negative split, etc.)
80-90 3:05 (2013 - Training was going terrific, but started to feel a little overcooked about 3/4 of the way through my training cycle. The lack of a pr here was also influenced by a slight injury and falling iron levels, though.)
Haven't finished a marathon since then. I had a couple of marathon training cycles that were going very well until various major setbacks (illness, injury) ruined things. In both of those I had settled back to around 75 mpw. That seems to be my sweet spot. I've learned that I really benefit from a decent level of mileage, but that I can only handle it if I'm super healthy going in.
