All of these records will be broken within the next Olympic cycle due to advances in doping technology that goes undetected in testing. Sad!

If Mo Farah gave it a shot, he might have a go at it with his 1500 speed and HM endurance (both are better than Bekele's PRs).
He seems to be content with being a racer, rather than a time-trialer, though.
El G's 4:44.79 2k will never be broken. Ever.
He averaged 56.96 per 400m for 5 laps. That's 3:49.6 at the mile, then holding it for another lap.
In the last 10 years, only 13 people have run faster than 3:49.6 in the mile. Kiprop would have a shot but would need to hit it perfectly.
Add in the fact that it's basically never run, and that record will never ever go down.
Not sure why anyone is still discussing this. I already told you it's the mile. Here are the 20 fastest miles ever. So yeah no one is breaking that. 1 3:43.13 Hicham El Guerrouj MAR 14.09.74 1 Roma 07.07.1999 2 3:43.40 Noah Ngeny KEN 02.11.78 2 Roma 07.07.1999 3 3:44.39 Noureddine Morceli ALG 28.02.70 1 Rieti 05.09.1993 4 3:44.60 Hicham El Guerrouj MAR 14.09.74 1 Nice 16.07.1998 5 3:44.90 Hicham El Guerrouj MAR 14.09.74 1 Oslo 04.07.1997 6 3:44.95 Hicham El Guerrouj MAR 14.09.74 1 Roma 29.06.2001 7 3:45.19 Noureddine Morceli ALG 28.02.70 1 Zürich 16.08.1995 8 3:45.64 Hicham El Guerrouj MAR 14.09.74 1 Berlin 26.08.1997 9 3:45.96 Hicham El Guerrouj MAR 14.09.74 1 London 05.08.2000 10 3:46.24 Hicham El Guerrouj MAR 14.09.74 1 Oslo 28.07.2000 11 3:46.32 Steve Cram GBR 14.10.60 1 Oslo 27.07.1985 12 3:46.38 Daniel Komen KEN 17.05.76 2 Berlin 26.08.1997 13 3:46.70 Vénuste Niyongabo BDI 09.12.73 3 Berlin 26.08.1997 14 3:46.76 Saïd Aouita MAR 02.11.59 1 Helsinki 02.07.1987 15 3:46.78 Noureddine Morceli ALG 28.02.70 1 Berlin 27.08.1993 16 3:46.91 Alan Webb USA 13.01.83 1 Brasschaat 21.07.2007 17 3:46.92 Saïd Aouita MAR 02.11.59 1 Zürich 21.08.1985 18 3:47.10 Hicham El Guerrouj MAR 14.09.74 1 London 07.08.1999 19 3:47.28 Bernard Lagat KEN 12.12.74 2 Roma 29.06.2001 20 3:47.30 Noureddine Morceli ALG 28.02.70 1 Bruxelles 03.09.1993

Thanks - BYEEEEEEEEEE
Kiprop can break it, so could Lagat in his prime, too.

Peak years Bekele was drastically faster than mo over longer distances (and that's no exaggeration--we're talking margins of 15+ seconds over 5k and 25+ seconds over 10k). I imagine if Bekele raced a half at his peak he would've been gunning for Tadese's 58:23.
Wrong.

For Mens Track records, the 800 is the the "break point." Distances under 800 more likely to be broken than distances over 800. Biggest reason of course is distance runners going to roads instead of track. Second reason, El G set the 1500, mile and 2000 and those are stout marks, no matter what anyone else wants to argue. Kiprop won't do it. He had his shot. He's been at the top of the heap for nearly 10 years, he will be on the decline before long.
Men's 400 hurdles?
Do you know Kiprop just ran a 3:26 less than 18 months ago off horrible pacing.
Bolts 100m record is going to stay a long, long time.
As will Bekeles 10,000m record.
If anything, the 1500m is the most likely to be broken within the next 4 years, and the 5000m could be taken down if some guys got after it more often, Paris DL was the last time I can remember anyone running under 12:50...
Alan MF Webb's outdoor American mile record. Centro may have medals but not enough hate to break Alan's record.
Drops mic
the 100-800m could be broken relatively soon, but I don't really expect it. Even the 1500m could fall within a few years: I could see Centro getting close to it in a few years. The 5000m and 10,000m are virtually untouchable,
Alan Webb the triathlete? Didn't know he was a track runner at one time.

This is made even better by noticing that the vast majority of these times were either set by ElG or in races that he was in. These are the best times from an ElG-free race.

3:43:13 looks even less likely.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Kiprops' 3:26.69 is equivalent to a 3:43 mile.
And the mile really isn't a record that should be in consideration here.
The 220 yard low hurdles record has stood since 1959 and I don't think it ever will be broken.
"Not a real record. Rarely raced at high levels, nobody cares. That's like saying the mile is safe."
The question was "which is the most untouchable outdoor record".
The 3k is an official recognized outdoor record. It's as viable a choice as any. And it, unlike the 2k, is run a fair amount. Just about every pro runner has a 3k PR. Not many have a 2k one.
Both the 2k and 3k are practically untouchable. El-G tried for the 3k and fell short by 2 1/2 seconds - which is a long way.
Likewise the 2k record is amazing - it's a 3:50 1600 followed with a 56 final 400. WTF.
The 5k and 10k and the 1-mile are all outstanding records, but I could see someone coming along and breaking those, without being able to break the 3k. And it takes a different type to break the 2k. A great miler who is also a great 5k (like El-G was). There's just not too many of those.
5000 then 10,000 are the strongest on the men's side. 400 will prob be broken in the next 1-2 yrs (by Wayde again, probably).
I'm going with 400h.
