You can do this for $48,900 on a small prop plane or $401,390 for a large airliner

I just did the around the world one on the same site.
It's only coming to $675,000 (and that's if I fly them back to LA after it's over. which only had 40,000 to the total) . They've got to get to South America on their own and it doesn't count the Antartic flight.
Wouldn't you need multiple sets of pilots who have worked together?

A 757 is about $12k an hour. They have over 30 competitors and probably an equal amount of supporters and crew. That means the group is too big for a typical corporate charter like a Gulfstream. And most of the legs on the route are too long for a smaller Airbus or Embraer. The budget buster is probably the plane to Antarctica. They have to fly on a special plane that can land on ice and that has all sorts of special de-icing systems and wind reinforcements.
They don't land on Antarctica. My friend ran there a few years ago and he flew to Argentina and took a boat to Antarctica and got shuttled in for the race. I'm sure researchers and stuff are allowed to fly in there, but they want to keep it as pristine as possible. My buddy said everything they took from the boat to the run they had to take back onto the boat, nothing at all was left behind. They also had to wash off their equipment both before and after they went there. It's a very regulated area.
I'd assume it's not the same plane for the entire race - maybe the same type of aircraft, but not the same plane throughout. It could be, but it would probably make sense not to have the same plane/crew logistically speaking. And you definitely wouldn't have the same pilots the entire time. If it was in the US, the FAA would flip out about the lack of rest time.
Like everything in life, the cost of a jet charter of a mid-sized transcontinental aircraft (B767, A330?) is negotiable, but a good guess is $10k/hour (from gate to gate). I'm assuming that a cost to put something like this together, airfare alone, is $500k (assuming 50 flight hours). To/from Antarctica is a whole 'nother story, since they don't have a large airport for you to land at. It's important to note that major airlines do charters - it's how sports teams get around.
Based on the itinerary, this is what I'd do - charter the Punta Arenas to Colombia to Miami leg on LATAM, Miami to Lisbon on AA, Lisbon to Marrakech is an easy one (short distance), then use Emirates to schlep you from Marrakech to Dubai to Jakarta, then Qantas or whoever.
I honestly don't envy any of the runners. This doesn't sound like fun at all.

Do they not own the plane?

True. But we can all be a little impressed that muscle man and retired runner Hall just ran 3:26 and 3:06. This is off of an "8 mile long run" in training.
Let's see what Miami holds for those tired legs.

Explain this?
32 x $38,600 = $1.235 Million.
So what is the 32 and the $38,600? Explain?
The samples of Muscle Milk Chocolate powder we tested contained all four heavy metals, and levels of three metals in the product were among the highest of all in our tests. Average cadmium levels of 5.6 µg in three daily servings slightly exceeded the USP limit of 5 µg per day, and the average lead level of 13.5 µg also topped the USP limit of 10 µg per day. The average arsenic level of 12.2 µg was approaching the USP limit of 15 µg per day, and the average for mercury was 0.7 µg, well below the USP's 15 µg-per-day limit. Three daily servings of Muscle Milk Vanilla Crème contained 12.2 µg of lead, exceeding lead limits, and 11.2 µg of arsenic. A fourth product, Muscle Milk Nutritional Shake Chocolate (liquid), provided an average of 14.3 µg of arsenic per day from three servings, approaching the proposed USP limit.
Unfortunately, Ryan has brain damage from drinking a lot of Muscle Milk with high levels of lead, cadmium, and arsenic.
Is that a really smart idea???
Answer:
This is why Ryan got lost in the woods during his last half-marathon race.

The same thing happened to some other guy who failed to break 3 hours in his "special" marathon race... after his NYC marathon race... because he also has brain damage.
That is not a surprise.
I heard a rumor that wejo and rojo drink 10 gallons of Muscle Milk per person... every single day…365 days per year.
It is just a coincidental rumor.

On our weekly call we started wondering what that costs. It can't be cheap.
Aviation guys- what sort of plane is required for this and how much would it cost?
The challenge costs 36,000 Euros ($38,600) and there are 32 people running it. That comes to $1.23 million.
Do all athletes pay or are the likes of Hall and Wardian comped?
No, no one is comped for the event. Wardian had received some money from sponsors and donors, Hall the same. Notice Wardian talking about his newest sponsor, T-Mobile.

I am sure it cost more than $38,600, the Antarctica leg is probably over $15,000 by itself. Also, there is only a brief window where planes can fly into Antarctica and even doing that period, the opportunity to fly is a day-to-day decision and the planes are cargo planes. The person I know who did the Antarctica Marathon had to take 3 flights to get to the southern tip of South American and then used a Russian trawler to get to Antarctica. The marathon only accepted a couple dozen entries and you pay a couple hundred bucks (non-refundable) just to get on the list. The person I know did it over 10 years ago, it might be cheaper now or perhaps cost more. Btw, the marathon is really-really difficult, most people end up walking at some point.

Yes, they do land aircraft on Antarctica for this race as well as a few other races.
Have you ever been to Antarctica, or do you just have a friend who you live vicariously through?
the world marathon challenge has to be the dumbest idea ever. They don't even run real races... it's a bunch of thrown together 26.2 mile courses. stupid

They do not own the plane. They lease the plane for a tour.

You probably do have a good grasp on dumb ideas, but exactly how do you define a real race? Isn't a foot race just people running on a course of a prescribed distance.
The NYC marathon got started by just throwing together a course and running around Central Park. I believe the drop out rate exceeded 50%.
Karl Meltzer said 6 figures to do Green Tunnel, aka AT Trail.
Could be same or less, if pilots want work and are sitting around,?waiting for work.

There's a life insurance policy involved, trust me.
I talked to Wardian about doing this event (seriously)....The price doesn't include you getting to Chile to start...and it also doesn't include your airfare home from Australia...so total cost is probably more like $41-42k (but hey what's a few thousand more at that point!) if coming from the US.
This is untrue , you are referring to an entirely different event called Triple 7 Quest which failed to do it in 7 days. The World Marathon Challenge starts in Antarctica and does not try to finish there.
