People forget this, but without the vision and brilliant mind of Mr. Cruijff, there is no Messi at Barcelona. Cruijff is the one who started Le Masia, Barcelona's youth academy.
As a pure footballer, he is, no doubt, in the top 5 of all time. If you combine his prowess as a player, as a manager and technical director, he is #1 all time.
Besides, the dude used to smoke a pack of cigarettes every day...as player and manager.
one can see that this is an american forum when noticing that many "Messi" answers.
there's no serious football (soccer) discussion for best all time player if it doesn't include Pelé (who's actually the best) and Maradona.
Messi is the best of the last 20 years.
Look, there is at least one of you in any of these kind of sports debates - the guy that thinks it is laughable that any current participant is even in the conversation. He definitely belongs in the conversation, as does CR7. Frankly, I'd wager Pele is more well-known in the US than Messi is, and he was mentioned in the original post.
Pele
Yashin
Puskas
Cruyff
Maradona
Maldini
Messi

Maradona good, Pele better, George Best.
I'd certainly still say Pele number one, with Cruyff, Maradona and perhaps Puskas in the reckoning.
They played at a time where as soon they realised you had a bit of skill you got Norman Huntered off the park. Pele was crocked from when he was a teenager and he still scored a million goals.
Freddy Adu. End of Discussion.
Messi = best player
Cruyff = best coach
Pele is overrated and not the best. Most of his goals were against part timers, and his international goals were because of his team mates. He was a clever player but not even in my top 5. Top 10 just.
CR7 is a great player but his motivation is ego and fame. Messi plays because he loves playing football, just pure talent and love of playing. Only negatives against him are his international form isnt great and he has only done it at one club.
I'd say its a close 3 way tie between Maradonna, Messi and CR7. Matthew Le Tissier in 4th.
If i had to pick one, id pick Maradonna who did it at multiple clubs, multiple world cups, and all whilst being high on drugs, fat and a midget.
Eric Cantona.

Messi and it's not even close
Messi is great, so was Maradona. Both of them much better than Pele, who has become somewhat overrated.
